Since this is your first post in the thread, am I correct in assuming your post means you don't think that video shows those people are pretty racist? What else would you call it?

A brown skinned (but not Muslim) guy walks through the crowd and they immediately start shouting at him about mosque building. That sounds pretty racist to me.

I meant in America, but yeah, Hitler would be a glaring example worldwide... and I suppose it doesn't matter what country the effect is represented in. Humans are humans, right?

Wish I was, too. Or at least in Canada.

Watched the video. While it seems that the people were wrong to direct their chants at that guy and that was quite stupid, the video was pretty unspectacular. Nothing in the video was anywhere near to being as outrageous as the banners below, which seemed to excite certain posters far less.

Just pointing out the witch hunt brigade's hypocrisy. Theyre as busy trying to paint people as bigots and racists as the bigots and racists are busy trying to paint all muslims as terrorists and islam as a philosophy of pure violence.

Both probably ought to back off that.

As for the video, cant watch it at work. My post has nothing to do with it. So yeah, your assumption would be wrong. I have no doubt there are racists and bigots in this fight, and these guys obviously qualify, but people need to be a little more judicious when throwing those labels around.

The image you loaded is not from the US is it? The image of the Mosque protest is from the US.

A couple of things I'll say are stupid about the Mosque protest is

    1. It is not at Ground Zero.

    2. It wouldn't matter if it took up both WTC buildings, and actually was at ground zero. That doesn't change the fact that a mosque in of itself is not offensive to anyone unless that person has something against Islam.

Why would a mosque be offensive? The only way it would be offensive is if it was a front for terrorists. We know this one is no such thing.

The only way the building is offensive is if someone is offended by Islam. If a protester is unable to differentiate the terrorists and what they claim is Islam and mainstream Islam, then the fault lies with the protester, not those building the mosque.

Uh, have you seen the footage of those idiots down there this week? Who do you think goes to those kinds of protests? Not exactly a league of extraordinary gentlemen.

Second, the story of the opposition to the project can't be overlooked. All was fine and dandy fro about 6 months - even earning the Fox News seal of approval - until a random nutjob anti-muslim blogger got picked up by the NY Post. That's really what happened. Why shouldnt it be the face of the opposition? It is the opposition.

 this post makes no sense.

Sure, you and like four other people in the USA are against the mosque for purely non-idiotic reasons.

But we're not talking about that here. As in the other thread, your POV (and the accompanying faux outrage) is totally out-of-place given the context.

There were people saying they wished they lived overseas. This picture is from overseas (UK).

But if you want something from the US:

To quote Greg Sargent from the Washington Post, if you're arguing that Park51 is "sacrilege towards 9/11" or is "provocative," you're legitimizing the premise that all of Islam is responsible for or associated with the 9/11 attacks.

Um, Islam *is* partly responsible for the attacks.

Of course a mosque near ground zero would be provocative, to claim otherwise is to be in pure denial. Sacriledge? Not so much. I don't play the guilt by association game. Being absolutist enough to claim that is implicates "All of Islam" is bullsh1t, and Sargent knows it. Believe it or not, some people would just appreciate Muslims doing those who would be upset a favor by not building. If they think that not building the mosque would be an admission of guilt for 9/11, then i dont know what to tell them, because it isnt.

    Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand boom goes the dynamite.

The crux of the issue is revealed. You blame the religion for the attacks, at least in part, and therefore oppose it.

Baptists I know hang their heads and are sad when the Westboro nonsense comes up. It shames them and they are sorry for it. It would never stop them from preaching the word to homosexuals though. When it comes to the Mosque issue though, all kinds of rage comes out. They oppose it. Be sensitive to the victims! When you don't support the religion to begin with it is suddenly easy to attack.

What gets me is how quickly this has become mob vs. mob and how quickly our emotional strings have been pulled rather than an inspection of the facts.

    As a young long-hair who dodged beer cans from passing rednecks and as part of an interracial couple who had to run from angry racists;

I fear for the safety of my Muslim friends.

I don't know why they directed their chants at that guy. The video is messy. Maybe those assuming that it was based on the guy's race are jumping to conclusions? But if race was the reason, no, not ok. But it's funny how people want to demonize those who disagree with them. These people are opposing a mosque. The people I showed in the picture are saying "behead those who insult islam". Interesting that opposition to a mosque sparks more outrage among many of the posters here than calls for beheading people in the name of Islam.

It shouldnt stop them from prostletyzing (sp?), i know it wouldnt stop me.

Like i said, consider it a personal favor to those who would be upset. If they dont care about that, then fine. But they should go forward knowing that it will engender some resentment towards them and their faith. They dont owe anybody anything, but some may think less of them for it. Thems the breaks.

Would you care to argue that Islam isnt partially responsible for 9/11? Id like to see how you could logically defend that conclusion. Theres nothing wrong with recognizing the faults in a religion. It sucks, but religions arent perfect examples of peace love and tolerance, especially the Abrahamic ones. I wish they were, but theyre not. And we will continue to see them inspire violencr in their name until they disappear.

Im also guessing you havent read my other posts on the matter, otherwise you would realize my opposition to the mosque is rooted in my fundamental disagreement with all religions, and not just any one particular faith or atrocity.

How can anyone claim that Islam did NOT play a role in the attacks? Many of the attackers were indoctrinated and brainwashed in a mosque in Hamburg. Religious motives were explicitly stated as reasons for the attack. Etc. etc.

The standard response is "they were not muslims, Islam prohibits killing of innocents". Either way, they were self-proclaimed muslims and their base was a mosque in Hamburg. It is very convenient to just say Islam had nothing to do with it.

    just curious

Is Christianity involved when an abortion clinic is bombed or an abortion doc is murdered?

If you frame it as a "mosque near ground zero," then possibly. If you frame it as a "mosque serving the large Muslim population in lower Manhattan," then not so much. People refer to the area as being like a massive crypt for the WTC, but it's a populous, bustling neighborhood. It's not defined by the presence of the WTC site.

But do we have any proof that people affected by the WTC attacks would be upset by placing the mosque there? Any more so than being upset by the existing mosque four blocks away, or holding Muslim prayer services in the Pentagon? The people getting upset by this are people looking for a reason to get upset, and just because they claim that the people who died on 9/11 would be offended doesn't make it true.
