I've brought this up before and the more I think about it the more sense it makes to me. Iraq is so fractious that the only thing that might hold it together is another secular strongman. Maybe not someone as bad as Saddam but essentially Mubarak or Musharaff. While democracy is an admirable goal its failing to guarentee security and so far looks likely to lead to civil war and the disintegration of Iraq as a single political entity. These aren't things that bode well for Mideast stability and IMO this is a choice among bad choices but it would allow us to pull out with a stable secure Iraq and give the Iraqis enough security to rebuild their economy and society. It will have longterm repercussions like our support for the Shah, Marcos and other petty tyrants but dealing with the here and now stability might bring more benefits than a nebulous vision of a democratic peaceful and unified Iraq that might never happen as long as the various groups there can't trust each other. This is probably better off in another thread.
So the C-Span logo in the corner shouldn't be believed? How then do we know these images aren't photoshopped if we're not even supposed to trust the identifier on them.
All I can say I didn't chop these photos, but I don't speak for the website which provides them. Their intention is a suspect at best, you know, to undermine the great war effort. BTW, it doesn't take a genious photoshopper (hey we have a few notables here on Clutch BBS) to insert C-SPAN logo into a picture.
Its sad that those who support the intervention continue to be portrayed as 'rednecks' who 'finally got sick of blue collar television and Larry the Cable guy.' I don't believe those stereotypes are productive to either debate or discussion.
Ditto for the stereotypes of those opposed to the war as being Birkenstock-wearing, PETA-loving hippies. And if you were offended by my stereotype, I wholeheartedly apologize.
I think they're more funny than sad.. howabout protraying anti-war protesters as traitors and apologists? now thats not even funny..
That's a fact, not a stereotype . J/K - agreed. I think both groups are pretty diverse. I don't like Larry the Cable Guy, although that guy Ron White is hilarious IMO. Not sure why one is better than the other. Both are designed to offend and belittle.
Cindy Sheehan Arrested Outside White House by Jennifer C. Kerr WASHINGTON -- Cindy Sheehan, the California woman who has used her son's death in Iraq to spur the anti-war movement, was arrested Monday while protesting outside the White House. Sheehan and several dozen other protesters sat down on the sidewalk after marching along the pedestrian walkway on Pennsylvania Avenue. Police warned them three times that they were breaking the law by failing to move along, then began making arrests. Sheehan, 48, was the first taken into custody. She stood up and was led to a police vehicle while protesters chanted, "The whole world is watching." Sheehan's 24-year-old son, Casey, was killed in an ambush in Sadr City, Iraq, last year. She attracted worldwide attention last month with her 26-day vigil outside President Bush's Texas ranch. Sheehan was among several hundred demonstrators who marched around the White House on Monday and then stopped in front and began singing and chanting "Stop the war now!" The demonstration is part of a broader anti-war effort on Capitol Hill organized by United for Peace and Justice, an umbrella group. Representatives from anti-war groups were meeting Monday with members of Congress to urge them to work to end the war and bring home the troops. The protest following a massive demonstration Saturday on the National Mall that drew a crowd of 100,000 or more, the largest such gathering in the capital since the war began in March 2003. On Sunday, a rally supporting the war drew roughly 500 participants. Speakers included veterans of World War II and the war in Iraq, as well as family members of soldiers killed in Iraq. "I would like to say to Cindy Sheehan and her supporters don't be a group of unthinking lemmings. It's not pretty," said Mitzy Kenny of Ridgeley, W.Va., whose husband died in Iraq last year. The anti-war demonstrations "can affect the war in a really negative way. It gives the enemy hope." http://www.commondreams.org/headlines05/0926-12.htm
And nothing.....it's pretty obvious this news relates to the thread as now some anti-war protesters (Sheehan included) have been arrested.
this just serves to once again illustarte how unbelievably ernest modern anti-freedom demonstrators are. at least in 1968, the chanters in chicago could manage the elision "world's" as in "The whole world's watching!". much sexier that way... -- Would you look around you now And tell me what you see Faces full of hate and fear Faces full of me Do you feel the rumblings As your head comes crumbling down Do you know what I mean Run, you better, run you know The end is getting near Feel the wind of something hard Come whistling past your ear As they try to get you Where it will upset you down Now you know what I mean Someday you will see how long We've waited for the time To show you how we've died To get together with you all Twist and turn your head around 'Till everything's unclear Twist and turn your arm around Until it is not there And they'd love to burn you Or at least to turn you around Now you know what I mean Can you look around you now And tell us what's to be Can you look inside yourself And tell us what you see As you feel the rumblings As your head comes crumbling down And you know what I mean Someday you will see how long We've been waiting for the time To show you how we've died To get together with you all
That is a possibility but not one that I am happy supporting. I think that the constitution should have been organized in a way that ensured a certain amount of representation from various factions. The representation from each of those factions(Sunni/Shiite/etc) would still be elected, but neither side would be out of the power structure. The document would definitely have to protect all the fractions involved and ensure a certain amount of power to those involved. The whole situation has been handled poorly. If we can't work it out in some way, then those who say bring the troops home are offering better advice than those who say to stay the course.
Nobody stated that you should care. It's news that relates to the thread. Protesters in Washington got arrested. If it bothers you that it's been posted then just ignore it. This is the last time I'm going to address the article for you.
No need to throw a tantrum. It doesn't bother me, I just didn't see what it added to the discussion. But then there isn't much discussion going on in this thread anyway. I guess you post fits right in.
What was the analogy Yao used that the SI Article quoted....."like an annoying little mosquito buzzing around my ears"...
