I think Melo won't accept an extension for going to Clippers, Warriors or Nets. And if there's no extension, there's no trade for the Nuggets because nobody will give them something for him.
Gawd, I actually kinda sorta agree with Hollinger on something. I haven't been into his articles lately, but a deal that would send Brooks to Charlotte, a 3-team deal.... Because Brooks on a team with a 2-guard who handles the ball (Stephen Jax, Iggy), well, would be a strong team.
Its partially up to him in that if its a team he doesnt want to go to, he can say he won't sign an extension with them, and they wouldn't offer near as much or possibly not offer at all. If rockets are on that list for the extension which they seem to be then they are good as long as they offer a good package
JR Smith is a headcase but he can score. That's basically what Martin brings, granted he is more efficient with it. And if it doesn't work out his deal is only for 1 year. If you trade for Melo someone in your backcourt has to play defense. I think the team would be more balanced with Billups/Lee/Melo than Brooks/Martin/Melo. Billups and Lee are good defenders for their position, and Billups is just as good offensively as Brooks. Arguably better when you bring decision making and crunch-time play into the equation. I wouldn't want to give them both up and if I had to choose one to go it would be Brooks first, but if that's what it takes to get Melo go for it, especially if you are getting a good PG and SG in return. You are basically adding a star player without making your team much weaker at any spot.
If Smith were "Ron Artest" crazy, maybe, but he just got through choking a teammate and training camp hasn't even started. Heck, maybe he's still choking him, lol. And we'd be taking on a huge amount of money. Drop Martin and Smith from the deal, and sure!
Erm, what you said is exactly why I think the Rockets are a likely contender. For one, I don't think those rebuilding teams are going to trade for Anthony if they don't have a guarantee that he's going to sign an extension. For another, the Rockets aren't Anthony's top choice, but they're a team he likes and on top of that, we have a lot to offer the Nuggets to. Possibly not the very best deal on the market (although one of them), but a damn good deal nonetheless. Morey has been stockpiling assets for just such an occasion. You combine the fact that we can offer so much value with the fact that Melo would like playing here, and the Rockets are one of the most solid contenders for Carmelo.
You are right, but we are only taking on a huge amount for a yr. Billups deal is a team option the next yr and only $3M is guarenteed. JR is a free agent. Actually, now that I look at it from the aspect that we could lose/renounce Billups and Smith the following year, then I agree that it's a lot to give up just for Melo.
I've felt that the way this goes down is a three team deal with Brooks going to the third team. Felt that way for a few days now. I don't (and never did) think Morey is sold on Brooks and with Brooks' MIP award and current salary there has to be a market for him.
aren't billups and smith, 2 of the guys melo gets along with least on the team? that trade doesn't make much sense for us. if melo signs the extension, then maybe...
Bobcats would probably be an awesome team with Brooks. They've already got league best defense, so he could just score all day long. Brooks SJax GWallace Diaw Mohammed/Diop
I would think the Bobcats have to give up a draft pick to get Brooks. Just trading an expiring for Brooks is a steal for them. That's not equal value. They've got to divvy up a first rounder.
Smith had negative trade value. Even more so now with this choking incident. It could be to the Rockets advantage. Flipping Smith with assets to another team could potentially get the Rockets under the tax even if they take on more salary in a trade with Denver.
If Denver doesn't want Brooks I don't see us giving him up. If they will take a deal without Brooks then he won't need to be included to make it work.
well if the rockets trade brooks and get melo, they will need to dump salary to make the trade work since they would be taking on a much larger contract. i think the rockets can dump jeffries on the bobcats to make the trade work. dampier also has extra value because his contract is not guaranteed this year so the nuggets can wave him for instant savings. all of that might negate the bobcats need to add a pick.
This is exactly what I was thinking. I was withholding judgement on her just in case Melo swung by to see what CF thought about him going to Houston
