Players do take pay cuts in rare situations, but restructuring a contract to sign a FA is rarely a pay cut. Restructuring a contract generally turns base salary for the current year into guaranteed money. Guaranteed money is spread throughout life of contract and lowers a players cap hit in the current year. I don't think Demeco took a pay cut. Kevin Walter got a pay cut. Basically he was told to take a pay cut or he would be cut. Walter settled for a deal that he made money, but did not cost Texans any cap space this season over the cost of cutting him.

I didn't log on to my fantasy draft in time and it automatically selected MJD for my first round pick. Same thing happened last year, but I missed the first 3 rounds. Two of the three picked were Jamaal Charles and Peyton Manning. Curse you, Yahoo.
He'd be a great fit with the Eagles, he can pass block and catch it out of the backfield with the best of them, and he could extend his career a few years playing behind McCoy.
http://espn.go.com/blog/afcsouth/post/_/id/39918/jones-drews-new-ploy-is-laughable Makes a good point that Jags FO shouldn't be inclined to trade him unless someone offers up a big return. Sets a dangerous NBA-like precedent that teams will cave and cater to every star that sulks and has a tantrum.
Didn't say he wanted to be there, just said it would be a good fit from a football standpoint. I have no idea if he wants to start, wants to be with a better team/org, or just wants more money. Not like he's a free agent and gets to choose his destination, either. But I have to think he might be happier with a winning team getting his same paycheck while taking less punishment every week. Sounds better than being a Jaguar, at least.
I'd trade MJD so fast if I was GM. The contract he wants... just doesn't make sense for Jacksonville. Easy decision.
Back up? No way. Detroit is perfect for him. Pats possible? 1st and 3rd? Hell maybe even Pittsburgh. Wallace for MJD trade?
Texan fans should really hope this trade doesn't go through. The jags are going to blow herds of chipmunks with or without MJD. Having him go to NE or any other AFC playoff team will not be a good thing for us. He needs to stay in jacksonville or go to the NFC.
Why does everyone blow a gasket over "backup"? If he went to Philly, he wouldn't start. McCoy is the incumbent and every bit as talented as him. And it's not like runningback platoons aren't a common thing now. "Starter" is just another word for "the guy who goes out on the first drive", not necessarily "the guy who gets the most playing time". Detroit would be a terrible fit, that would be a waste of talent, much like if he went to New Orleans. Patriots aren't a great fit either, but better than Detroit, at least. And Moes is right, nobody is going to give up a bunch for a guy with shakey knees whose best yards are mostly behind him, and wants a big new contract on top of that.
A) I don't think anyone is blowing a gasket, but B) you're talking about one of the best RBs in the league going somewhere to be a back up. There's no way he's happy if that's his destination this year and no way the Eagles give up what it takes to get him when they already have McCoy.
I don't think any of us can speak to what would make MJD actually happy, other than a fat new contract. Like I said, it's a great football fit, that's all. Never said it was likely or even possible.
He's made it clear he wants to be paid. That said, I just can't imagine he'd want to go anywhere where he's paid like a #1 but not getting the starting reps as a backup. Philly seems like they like to throw quite a bit so it may be difficult to give both backs the number of touches they would like to see.
Not really, they were 13th in passing attempts and 12th in rushing attempts... but when they do throw, they like to feature their runningbacks. Which is why it would be a good fit. MJD seems like he's made for the WCO. Plus Vick needs all the help he can get staying upright, and MJD is elite in pass blocking. Detroit/NE on the other hand would be a terrible fit (especially Detroit), as MJD's main strength (i.e. running the ball) would go to waste. I have no idea if starting is as important to him as A) money or B) getting the hell out of Jacksonville, but I can't see somebody being terribly upset with getting paid All-Pro money while not having to go out and kill yourself every week. But it's unlikely Philly would 1) bother trading for him in the first place and 2) give him a pay raise if he wasn't going to be a feature back. So, once again, while it's a great football fit, it's logistically not very likely.
My fantasy draft was really early this season and I took MJD early on because I just assumed that would get something done. Whoops...
The Philly talk is pointless. Perfect fit would be Detroit. They need a dynamic back like MJD to balance the offense. Rushing the ball more can also eat clock and keep their average defense off the field (See Saints playoff game). Second option would be New England. For 16 straight weeks MJD, JD encountered 9 men in the box without any WR threats and a horrible rookie QB. 1600+ rushing yards. Impressive.
damn, New England with MJD, would be almost invincible. because you dont know who to cover, you cant stay in the box to cover MJD, because Tom Brady will make you pay, and you cant blitz, because MJD is a good blocker and Brady would have a little more time to find a target or it could be a run play and MJD will make you pay. I dont know if MJD is asking for a lot of money in Jax because he knows isnt going to get a ring, but what if he goes to NE, does he signs for the same contract to get a ring, or just goes to a bad team with a lot of salary cap.
