this doesn't look better than the animations on madden. the physics are probably better, but the animation on 360 madden is silky.

    http://xbox360.ign.com/articles/866/866627p1.html
Video at link, or you can check out the Youtube version:

I haven't been keeping up with the game, but there are several other dev diaries (with other videos) at IGN, along with an article called "The Art of Control."

Not exactly jaw dropping graphics. Its more about the in-game physics engine and not having pre-determined tackle animations. The game itself might not be much, and they have to sell it on something distinct like "no tackles are ever identical". But it could definitely be influential for other how sports games play.

But what do I know, I still have regular Xbox games to catch up on

they need the NFL license, if they don't have it nobody will buy it.

This isn't the days of Double Dribble, its about marketing and recognition.
no one is going to buy a football unless they have teams and players they can identify with.

Really? I don't particularly like the art design, but the game is pretty impressive technically speaking. Even the graphics are pretty impressive, although this video probably doesn't demonstrate it very well (some HD videos would be nice). Some of the vids in the rendering and crowd dev diaries look nice:

It is 360/PS3 AFAIK. I've just been been posting 360 IGN links instead of PS3 IGN links.

I think some people will definitely give it a shot. I'm definitely more interested in this game than the new Madden, and I know I'm not the only one. They could do themselves a favor by allowing players to customize teams/players, but you are right that they probably won't be able to really compete with Madden w/o the NFL license. Of course, I doubt that is their goal.

To be honest, even though I do like what they're doing with the game, I'm more interested in seeing them sell their tech to other publishers for use in their games (of course, the big one would be EA using it for Madden).
