Five killed in blast near Taba crossing with Egypt
Explosion rocks tourist bus, leaving four Koreans, one Egyptian dead; 30 wounded, some of them hospitalized in nearby Eilat

An explosion ripped through a tourist bus on the Egyptian side of the Taba border crossing with Israel Sunday afternoon, killing five and injuring some 30 passengers.

Four Korean tourists and the Egyptian driver of the bus were killed in the blast, according to Egyptian security officials, who said the bus had arrived at Taba from the ancient Greek Orthodox monastery of St. Catherine’s in central Sinai.

The officials said the source of the explosion was not clear, but they believe it was either a car bomb or a roadside bomb that was detonated by remote control. Some reports in the Egyptian media claimed the bus was first fired upon, then a bomb detonated inside it. Egypt’s al-Ahram daily had initially reported the explosion was the result of a missile being fired at the bus.

Ansar Bayt al-Maqdis, an al-Qaeda affiliated terrorist organization, reportedly claimed responsibility for the attack, various Arabic-language media outlets reported.

The Sinai-based al-Qaeda-linked group was also responsible for firing several rockets at Eilat over the past month from across the border.

Officials said nearly all the vehicle’s 33 passengers were wounded and were being treated in hospitals in Egypt and across the border in the Israeli port city of Eilat.

A picture from the scene showed a burnt-out husk of a bus on the side of the road.

What an ideology of hate, constantly killing innocent people.
