According to this source Dallas isn't even the second largest city in Texas. http://www.infoplease.com/ipa/A0763098.html I think Dallas gets more attention outside of TX than Houston due to the TV show.
That's not surprising. It's the Metroplex that's big, not the city proper. Between Dallas, Fort Worth, Arlington and all the rest, it makes for a huge MSA. The Houston MSA is mostly just Houston with only minor contributions from the other townships around. Same with San Antonio.
While the MSA may be similar people in Ft. Worth don't identify that much with Dallas. For instance someone from Ft. Worth while travelling probably won't say their from Dallas while someone from Clear Lake will probably just say they are from Houston or the Houston area. So the Metroplex may be similar in size to the Houston Metro Area that doesn't mean that Dallas is comparable in size to Houston.
Man, the hate and insecurity abound in this thread... Having lived up here in the Dallas area (not Dallas proper) for about 8 years now, the topic of Houston rarely comes up. As for Dallas not accepting refugees from La., that's a lie. Thousands came here. Not to mention all the .... Houstonians that came here. FD Khan, you should see this movie if/when it comes out, tho'. It should be funny. : http://www.30kmillionaires.com/
dude that so applies to the people up here.... and its spreading like weeds out of dallas and in to the burbs. dallas and its clone cities are as the 30k site says, the LA of the south.... but they're trying to be the NY of the south and its not going to work, they lack an identity here that houston and SA have.
Glad I'm not that "someone". I'm more than proud to say I'm a Clear Lake resident. I  my lakeside community, no matter how many hours of traffic I get to enjoy now that the n00bs are flooding in.
No offense, but outside of Texas, what identity does SA have? Serious question. What I find somewhat alarming is that growing up Houston was always the "Dome City" or "the Space City" or whatever. I'm not sure that still exists. People don't gaga over NASA anymore. Dallas is pretty much known for 3 things : The Cowboys, The TV show, and they shot JFK. That being said, if my house continues to appreciate in value, I'll probably sell it and move back to Houston eventually.... maybe.
The Dallas burbs are exploding, too. A house with the same floorplan as mine (with a few different upgrades) just sold for about 40k more than I bought mine about 1.5 years ago. They're building like crazy in my town (Frisco). At one point it was the fastest growing city in Texas and the 2nd fastest in the nation. In 1990 there were 6,000 people here... now there's over 85,000. The result is that traffic can be a nightmare until they finish building the roads, but it's a great area. I do see a lot of the 30k millionaire mentality around here, though. Lots of superficiality. Sickening at times.
can't say for outside of texas, but these come to mind: the alamo, river walk, seaworld... they even have a theme park still which houston can't claim anymore it's true that dallas may have more tourist attractions than SA, but atleast down there they know who they are and where they come from... and, correct me if i'm wrong, it doesn't seem that they're trying to be something that they're not. they're gonna ditch frisco eventually, head for mckinney or even farther north to anna.... but its true, the house i'm in (in carrollton) has gone up 50k in the 9 years we've lived here.
Naa... McKinney isn't "foo foo" enough. And Anna? Dang, that city just got hit by F3 tornados. Nobody's gonna move up there... that's be like a 1.5-2 hour drive to work! A lot of them are moving up to 380... like Prosper. That's the next boom. I should've bought land up there. The Tollway will hit Prosper late next year and then they'll take it up to Celina. Everybody's trying to go to the burbs... pretty soon there won't be a city.
The Alamo's basement... Dallas feels like another US city with no real landmarks. I guess its appeal to other Americans is that it's less Texan-like. Houston has the rodeo and many people still have their thick accents.
Yes... We Houstonians and our thick accents... I've been told I sound more like a New Yorker than anything else, and I'm a third generation Houstonian.
this is Dallas' biggest problem in my view. it's gonna become Detroit south if they're not careful. an eroded tax base...eventually the jobs follow outside of the city core to the suburbs, as well. apparently that's already happening in Dallas given commercial occupancy rates.
That ain't no lie brother--I graduated from UNT and now just bought a home in Fort Worth...Thank god that I have Fort Worth Nights AND Days! btw--we need to get together for a game sometime now that I have made the move from Houston.
Both Dallas and Houston have filled in for Detroit in the Robocop movies. I guess besides both being in Texas they have that in common.
BFE...My cousin lives in McKinney and I actually looked out there before settling in North Dallas near Addison...Too far and too much traffic...The thing is, with all this building, what the hell do these people do to afford these places...That's what's scary...It's like that everywhere in Dallas... Like I said, I enjoy it up here, for the most part, as its just some of the people that can turn you off to the city...I do enjoy my time in Addison off of Beltline though...
