I agree the leadership sux, but to say they got sh*t done is an understatement...This is a quote from the above article: Now I'm sure the Dallas people will open their wallets, as I did, but c'mon, they want no part of this... btw, what FDKhan said is right and disturbing...I noticed it when I first moved here that its all smoke and mirrors...
From the apartment side, Houston was much more prepared and agile at finding places for evacuated families than Dallas was. After a while, they decided they needed to start copying Houston's model for putting evacuees in apartments. Hopefully, they learned something from the Katrina event that will make them more prepared for the next time. Same with Houston, I suppose.
I assume you meant "overstatement". I can only vouch for what Mayor Miller and Judge Keliher did themselves, which did involve getting people into places in other cities and counties. While the Dallas area had nowhere near what Houston had, the count I heard during the aftermath of Katrina was that the Dallas area housed tens of thousands in total. If only 3,000 were in Dallas proper, then the rest of the Metroplex picked up a lot of slack. Given the demographics and overall political affiliation of Dallas proper, one would think they'd be more interested in housing those displaced by an emergency situation. Oh well. You hate Dallas. Nothing I can say will ever change that perception and you can find as much evidence to justify that as I could to try and debunk it. Making no difference at all in the end. So, I'll just join in. Dallas Sucks.
what you just described is EXACTLY the experience my parents had when they lived there in the 60's for a couple of years. right down to the "oh, i'm sorry" quote. my mom still talks about that today.
I still remember my aunt lambasting Houston because of the nickname "Space City" and how crappy it was compared to "Big D". I was like four and I already wanted to slap her.
I agree. I don't consider Dallas part of Texas. We should just move the border and give them to Oklahoma.
A modified quote from Stripes seems appropriate here... State Government (to Dallas): Lighten up, Dallas. We're all in this together. One of these cities may save your life one of these days. You understand that? Houston: Then again, maybe one of us won't.
By the way, anyone notice how Austin is ready to accept as many as 23,000 people AND their pets? Way to go Austin!
Dallas people remind me of Los Angeles people, without the hippie-dippyness. This is probably the reason why I've only been up there twice in my lifetime.
I hate these threads. They always seem like Houston is envious of Dallas. I'm personally not. Dallas' MSA and Houston's MSA are just about identical. We're both the same size city, but, somehow, Dallas media market is much higher than Houston's. The point is that I have dozens of friends who grew up and still live in Dallas. The town isn't that bad. I would just prefer us as Houstonians to simply ignore Dallas, or take the high road when speaking of the town. The more Dallas b****es about us, and the less we do of them, the better. Let them be the envious town who needs to cheap shot us for them to feel better.
Unless you are looking for a six pack to purchase in a 7-11.....dry area, wet area, dry area....punk-ass beeyotches!
Interesting approach, but you know it'll never work...Dallas people are just different...I'm not saying all of them, but unfortunatley the majority of them, mostly the $30,000 millionaires...I've lived here for two years and for the most part, its ok, but its no Houston when comparing people's attitude and friendliness... Agreed...Honestly, its the I'm better than anyone attitude...
These threads seriously make me happy. I thought it was just me that people from Dallas act differnt than most cities but I see that my assumptions were pretty much correct.
