Jeez, what a hard question to answer. You have to factor in the kind of music to pick a favorite singer; i.e. while guys like Sting and David Bowie have great voices, they sure wouldn't be 'great' in fronting a particular band like Pantera or Black Sabbath.

Some of my favorite vocalists for their particular brand of Rock 'n Roll:

Ozzy Osbourne, solo and Black Sabbath
James Hetfield, Metallica
Phil Anselmo, Pantera
Axel Rose
Vince Neil, Motley Crue
Jimi Hendrix
Stevie Ray Vaughn
The singer from Queensryche
The singer from Dream Theatre
Phil Collins
Sting
Billy Gibbons and Dusty, ZZ Top
Bon Scott and Bryan Johnson, AC/DC

.....and the list goes on and on. Those listed are my personal favs.

Well I don't know if you could say this band is "rock" or not, but I'm going to mention him anyway because he was a great singer that died way too early...

I was going to start a thread just like this last night crispee, then I saw yours. Weird...

Geoff Tate.

Showmanship is a huge component in being a rock frontman. Huge. Second but almost as important for me is voice and range. I will throw in songwriting talent in there as well. I can think of 9 that stand out to me, and a bunch of others who I also enjoy. Of course these are just my own personal favorites.

1) Butch Walker
2) David Lee Roth
3) Freddie Mercury
4) Glen Danzig
5) Sebastian Bach
6) Ian Astbury
7) Paul Stanley
8) Alice Cooper
9) Robin Zander

Geoff Tate
Bruce Dickinson
Rob Halford
Donnie Vie
Axl Rose
Vince Neil
Bret Michaels
Steven Tyler
Bon Scott
Brian Johnson
Ozzy Osbourne
Todd Lewis
Billy Idol
Robert Plant
Dave Mustaine
Ted Nugent
Klaus Meine
Peter Steele
Jeff Keith
Sammy Hagar
John Bush
Mick Jagger
Phil Lynott
Jim Morrison
Marc Bolan
David Bowie
Gene Simmons

Nomar: Honestly, I have heard of Dave Matthews but I couldn't name or recognize any of his music. Just a name to me. The others literally sailed right over my head. I may have heard them because I've given my 16 YO daughter the power of the tuner when we are riding in the car together. How unhip of me....

Dave Matthews?????:( :(

That guy is a good singer/songwriter type, but does he really have a "great voice"??

When I think of great rock singers, I immediately think of Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, Bobby Bland, Robert Plant, Elton John, Roy Orbison, Don Henley, and then 800 more before the name Dave Matthews pops up on the list.

btw, Rock and Roll was invented by black Americans, so don't forget the many great black vocalists that made rock and roll what it is today.
