Another injury signals our destiny: is it realistic to bench Amen ever again?

Discussion in 'Houston Rockets: Game Action & Roster Moves' started by Mathloom, Jan 7, 2025.

?

Who sits if Brooks/Amen are playing well when Jabari returns?

  1. 38%-shooting Brooks

  2. Budding Star Amen

  3. 6'11 Jabari who was hitting 40% of his 3's and playing really good defense

It's hard for me to envision them benching or trading Brooks in the middle of a season like this, given he's played well this year overall and is one of our few actual floor-spacers. Plus, Jabari doesn't even get back until around March I bet, well after the trade deadline.

I honestly wonder if we're not approaching a situation where Jabari and Tari are fighting for minutes. If we didn't also have Tari healthy now, I don't think it would be any problem getting Jabari 28mpg or so, between backing up the forward positions and maybe a little bit of small ball 5. But with both of them clearly deserving significant bench minutes (at a bare minimum) it becomes a bit of a crunch.

I do think we should probably trade one of Dillon, Jabari, or Tari during the offseason. I would favor trading Brooks in a vacuum, but of course it depends on the specific trade and I could see scenarios where trading one of the other two might make sense (for example, instead of giving up future FRPs in a larger trade).

Sure I get what you're saying but this comes at a time were we just beat Grizz x1, Cavs 2x, and Celtics all without Jabari. Brooks last night hit 10 threes.

If Jabari plays amazing off the bench yes then you can make your argument. But right now the meritocracy leans towards Brooks until he slumps otherwise.

Jalen Green takes 8.1 attempts per game and makes 36%. Jabari takes almost 5 attempts and he makes 36%. Jalen clearly the better shooter.

Brooks was shooting like 37% on 6 attempts before this Celtics game. Slightly higher % than Jalen, lower volume. Jalen is almost a 90% FT shooter now, it's obvious which direction this will go.

Not to mention Green's 3's can come off of movement and motion unlike the other two. He'll even create 3pt shots for us rather than get assisted all the time.

Guys, I'll just be blunt: no one - and I really mean no one - is going to unseat Jalen anymore. To think that he'll be replaced by Brooks is silly at this point. The team needs Green's points creation and transition ability. 3PT volume.

I know you don't like it, but let's just be realistic here.

Jalen is not top 50 in defensive rating or win shares. Jabari is ranked #15 in the NBA. Our defensive ratings and rebounds have dropped since we lost Jabari to injury and thats with Amen starting in his place. I agree with the points creating and transition ability part. Losing that would be a huge deficit.

But there is an argument to be made that this team would be better defensively and the spacing would be better. Jalen's percentages rose significantly after his hot streak but before that the dude was shooting 31% and was below 30% on wide open threes. This is year 4 for Jalen and I know he is 22 but one cold streak in the playoffs and its over.

Can say the exact same thing about Jabari. In his last 20 games he was helping us win every bit as much as Brooks.

I don't think they'll trade him but here's what I think will happen:

Ime will initially go with Brooks
The defense will never recover to top two, Ime's intense OCD will kick in
He's going to study the situation and remember we were better with a wing defender and Jabari
Green will be playing well, FVV brings something the others can't, Sengun can't be replaced, Amen is a lock
So what on earth can he even do to make a difference and get back into that top 2 defense spot he covets?
Brooks is going to have a cold week, we're going to lose a couple of games because of cold shooting
Brooks will miss at least a game for a minor injury
Jabari's plus/minus will reflect that he's operating better with the key players
Brooks never makes it back into the starting lineup

This is all dependent on Jabari shooting 38% after his first 10 games though. If he doesn't do that all this is moot.

Comes down to who Udoka thinks is the best PF. I'm not close to 100% certain, but if the decision is Brooks vs. JSJ, I think Udoka picks Brooks.

I don't think the decision is solely Brooks vs. JSJ. I'd guess odds are decent the Rockets add someone at the deadline.

Bro, talk to me about a stat I can go an sort right now and it won't look like a random list.

I can cherry pick stats too, here:

Jalen has one of the best EFG% defense one month ago
Jalen is top 2 in pick and roll defense in the NBA

It doesn't even matter, we won't change the goal posts. You said they are better shooters. Now you want us to believe we're going to start Jabari just because of defense? We're 26th in TS% (9th in offense). We're 4th in defense. We're not going to sit Jalen Green for Jabari Smith. Get real.

You really think we're going to sit our top scorer who's more efficient than Sengun right now?

Brooks is the worst rebounder in the starting lineup. 200lbs Jalen Green is grabbing more rebounds than him dude.

I don't care what Jalen used to shoot, talk to me about now. If it's about what we used to do, Dillon Brooks is a poor 3pt shooter on a hot streak too? Because you know how he's shot his whole career. Just 0.1% better than Jalen despite taking way fewer attempts.

I think you haven't watched a game in a while if I'm being honest bro. You assessments seem true for 2 months ago.

Jabari at the 5 is going to be out "death lineup" longterm... book it.

I think Jabari comes off the bench moving forward, but often closes out games at the 5 since Sengun just continues to show us how vulnerable he is on defense. To finish out the season I continue to start Sengun, but when Jabari comes back I like him finishing games on the defensive end especially.

Brooks longterm... we'll see. I would probably prefer to keep and extend out Jabari, Tari, and of course Amen but if it's a choice a year or so down the line... sorry Dillon... I think I'll trade him as long as Tari is healthy... which is also a question mark long term with his leg situation. The Brooks thing though.... that's a question for next season. Right now he's an important piece.

Being able to trade Sengun though is only an option if Jabari really bulks up at some point, and we develop more playmaking. Sengun is really important to our halfcourt offense as a passer, creator, scorer. He's probably untradeable this Summer too unless we develop our guys more, or trade for a superstar who can create.

Long story short... I think we try like hell to keep everyone and in the short we bring Jabari off the bench, but he still plays a huge role as a small ball 5 with Adams likely getting less minutes this season, and maybe letting him walk in free agency this Summer if he won't come back on an Vet discount deal.

Im not cherry picking stats go to the NBA website and look at net defensive win shares. Jabari is number 15 on that list close to guys like Lu Dort. We are 4th in defense over the entire season but the last 10 games our rating has dropped and our rebounding has as well. Even Ime acknowledged this during his interviews which I also watch with the games. You talking like Jalen consistently plays well the entire season which is just factually inaccurate. More than half of this forum wanted him traded last year before he decided to play like an all-star in March.

I don't think Ime is going to prioritize Jalen Green's offense over defense plain and simple. Jalen and Sengun are the first players to get pulled in most games and sit on the bench for extended periods when they are playing poorly. Ime was subbing Green out for Tari Eason to close the Boston game because the dude is getting cooked by Jaylen Brown and Pritchard. (Even before his eye injury)

So yeah at that point it's subjective, I just happen to think Udoka will go with the guy who will complete his defense and has the potential to give him better overall shooting. I also think Udoka is 100% aware from past research that Dillon's career playoff splits are 38/32/72 to go with 3.1 rebounds. Memphis Grizzlies fans made sure to tell me that when I asked about Dillon.

This is why I'm supporting Durant to Houston. That Brooks spot. That's perfect for Durant. Then I'm happy for Jabari to backup the 5/4/3 and be mentored by Durant for 1.5 years until his extension kicks in and he becomes the starter. Then I can at least see a case for it. As is though, Brooks is making this a tough decision and I complain but actually this is an amazing problem to have.

Net Rating of each player's last 20 games prior to JSJ's injury cherry picked to make JSJ look good.
    JSJ 6.0
    Brooks 9.8

Brooks has a large sample showing he's better than JSJ. Even cheryypicking a hot streak for JSJ doesn't show the Rockets playing better with JSJ.

JSJ may end up a better fit than Brooks with the rockets starting lineup and will likely be better than Brooks one day. At this point, JSJ has only been better in small streaks.

Bro if Jabari is as good a defender as Lou Dort, he's a better overall scorer and comparable shooter to Brooks, and he grabs almost double the rebounds and blocks triple the amount of shots.

Why shouldn't Jabari start at PF over Brooks since Amen and Green are simply playing better than Dillon Brooks?

I think Jalen will start. Im just saying there is an argument to be made because of how Ime coaches. Brooks and FVV are rated number 21/22 in defensive win shares as well. Also if you watched last nights game Brooks was handing it to Jaylen Brown on the defensive end.

I think you are right though on the transition and the offensive load. I think Brooks might just be too slow for Amen, Jabari and Green.

Oh I don't believe in this type of analysis at all. That's not how lineups work. Your analysis certainly will not accurately tell us how much Jabari's shooting helped other's drives. How much did Amen and Green benefit from it? Not reflected here, but important to our strategy.

Btw I have no idea what Jabari's net rating is, so I couldn't cherry pick even if I wanted to. I just know he was shooting well that time. And he's a young player who worked on his shooting. Who's shooting well for 20 games. Yeah. It matters. It's less likely to be a streak than Dillon's.

Dillon may have improved as a shooter. He's a very good player. I think Udoka is more likely to look at double the rebounds, triple the stocks, and 7'1 wingspan to help get the interior defense under control. I don't think he'll be worried about a 3 point difference in net rating with a different mix of teammates and opponents. I believe that's a small sample too (Sengun/Jabari/Amen/Green/FVV vs Sengun/Brooks/Amen/Green/FVV how many games worth of data could there possibly be).

Lol Ime has defended Jalen to death since day 1 and held him in that starting spot. He said Jalen will get better at exactly the stuff he got better at. Things are going exactly as he predicted. He wasn't making it up. He really likes Jalen. He's constantly defending Jalen's defense, calls it underrated.

The game is two ways. We pick the best two way players who compliment each other. Sengun/Amen/Green is a lock at least right now, let's be honest. That leaves two spots and if you have such weak shooting in your core trio, then surely you can see the other 2 just need to be our best jumpshooters who can play defense. I just don't see Brooks outdefending Tari/Amen at SF or Jabari at PF or FVV at PG. I definitely don't see him outshooting Jabari and FVV over the course of a season.

Brooks/Tari/Cam/Adams off the bench would be nice. I hope you are right OP. Green did play well against the Cavs.

I'm honestly expecting that Jabari will start out coming off the bench at this point and given that he seems to be very rhythm/confidence based as a shooter, I think there's a decent likelihood that he will shoot poorly at first. If we assume he comes back in say the second week of March... not a lot of season left at that point for him to "get right" so to speak.

My thinking is that, barring other injuries or a bad losing streak (God, I hope not), whatever the rotation is going into April will be the playoff rotation.

You cherry picked when JSJ had a hot streak. Not know Net Rating numbers don't matter. You picked a time period that was JSJ's best.

Of course you think the Rockets playing better with Brooks than JSJ is a flawed way to determine who has helped the Rockets more.

On the Sengun/Jabari/Amen/Green/FVV vs Sengun/Brooks/Amen/Green/FVV, that's 200 minutes versus 74 minutes. That's about 6 games assuming about 30 mpg vs 2. Both sucked. There is 600 minutes with FVV/Green/Amen/Sengun and it just has not been pretty whoever the 5th man is. I don't think Brooks vs. JSJ fixes it. If the Rockets stay with FVV/Green/Amen/Sengun, someone out of those 4 needs to rotate better and help more on the defensive boards.

Honestly if Green/Amen/Sengun are legit the rest is easy. Hope they acquire a great bench player this deadline, that little bit will help a lot.
