If athletic accomplishment is a prerequsite for hosting, then most of these mentioned candidates for the 2016 might as well forget about it.

    Medal count from 2004 Olympics:
    Dubai. UAE. 1
    Flanders. Belgium. 3
    Milan. Italy. 32
    New Delhi. India. 1 (also 1 in 2000, 1 in 1996, 0 in 1992)
    Prague. Czech Republic. 8
    Warsaw. Poland. 10

In addition, UAE and India might be a bit warm during the Summer.

Subway sandwiches are pretty good, especially now that they are offering the toasting option. I wish they'd put the mustard on there before toasting, though, because I really like warm mustard. Just something about that stuff that's great!

I don't like Subway's toasting method. It takes too long. I prefer Quiznos.

You hate the French because they opposed the US war justifications about UN sactions...right?
    French were right.
America was wrong (about the justifications of war)
You continue to hate the French.

Just pointing that that your continued anti-French rhetoric is now outdated.

Let me tell you something. When you ASSUME, you make an A$$ out of U and ME. Keep that in mind.

My dislike of all things French predates the Iraq conflict.

France's position on Iraq was driven by their oil interests, anyhow.

Yup, exactly the same way that the United States' position on Saudi Arabia is driven.

I guess Chirac should be more careful in his comments about English food.

Glad London won, overall, the people are nicer there.

Then I'm curious, why do you dislike the French?

America is the largest oil consumer in the world. France generates something like 80% of the energy from nuclear sources. So looking at motivation, your argument is pretty weak.

Regardless of France's oil interests, their publicaly stated justifications for NOT going to war proved right and America's public statements proved wrong.

So I repeat, your anti-French rhetoric about the Iraq war is out-dated. Even to say France was motivated by oil...is pretty lame.

It was a reference to that big glass pyramid that the French put up on the grounds of the Louvre. It takes away from the louvre and isn't the proper setting for the pyramid either, IMO.

It turned something awesome, into something awesome with a huge out of place disfigurement on it.

I wasn't aware of London doing any such thing with their historical landmarks.

London is just too congested and rainy for me to envision it being a good venue for the Olympics. Plus the British public themselves didn't even want the games. Paris on the other hand had overwhelming public support. You really have to feel for Paris after having lost now 3 times in 20 years. It's unlikely they will even try again for decades to come now.

The way that London won is hard to take as well. From my understanding, in the final weeks they secured votes by 'lobbying' South American judges and whoring out pieces of their stadium construction. Paris already has the stadium in place, so there was really no construction money to dole out.

Also, I'm not really convinced of the accuracy of these Chirac comments, considering they are hearsay from a couple of British journalists just days before the big vote.

That giant ferris wheel is a bit unsightly if you ask me.

London put up that ultra-modern ferris wheel in the heart of the city visable from everywhere. So if your complaint is that Paris puts up modern ugly stuff, London's is uglier.

I happen to think it's kinda cool...in both cases.

that pyramid is the entrance to the louvre's underground expansion, it is not modern art per se. it is a monumentally successful architectural solution to the problem of much needed additional gallery space. i think it's beautiful to boot so, to each his own i guess. and to the original assertion you made, london is equally capable of putting up "ugly" modern art. in fact, si is new york, hell, who isn't?

    http://courses.arch.hku.hk/precedent/97-98/grp12/intro.html

    I. M. Pei's design of the extension of Le Grand Louvre was once a topic all over the world mostly because of his pyramid design of the entrance.

After three visits to Le Grand Louvre, I. M. Pei found that putting a new structure in Le Grand Louvre would destroy the whole atmosphere and that the only solution was to put everything underground.

He stated that this underground structure should be at the Napoleon Square. This would give Le Grand Louvre a centre under the Napoleon Square.

However, with a underground structure, the extension of Le Grand Louvre would not be noticeable. To make the new structure shows, I. M. Pei wanted to create a marker to the great change of Le Grand Louvre. In order to make the lobby a grand place, he believed sunlight was a necessity.

With these, I. M. Pei tried different geometry above ground to be the entrance to Le Grand Louvre, and in the end, he chose a glass pyramid.

In addition, the relationship between the volumes of the old and new structures was important. With the same base area, the volume of a pyramid is the smallest.

The pyramid was good in the structural aspect as well. Le Grand Louvre is by the riverside and this gave rise to foundation problem caused by underground water. The foundation for a pyramid can be much shallower than that of other systems.

From a historical point of view, a pyramid is a representation of civilization which gives a mysterious ambience. This suits Le Grand Louvre, with a history of 700 years, well.

I am stunned the frogs fought with the U.S. in the first Gulf War. The only purpose the French seem to have and enjoy is being a pain in the a$$ to the rest of the world.

I consider myself a liberal and I am with bigtexxx, screw the froggies!
