I never understand those cost of living things. For example, everything I buy is cheaper in Arlington than it is in Amarillo. My apartment rent is virtually the same. And houses are more expensive in Amarillo vs. Arlington. But if I go to one of those cost of living website thingys, it's always said that the cost of living is significantly less in Amarillo vs. where I live now.

Of course, there are such wide swings in different parts of big cities that it really is impossible to have one single cost of living for a city as big as Houston or D/FW or cities like that.

Going back to choosing a city in which to live, so much of what makes a place to live comfortable is the people you know there. For example, Lubbock and Amarillo are essentially the same city. They are about the same size, people are basically the same in both places, etc. But I hated living in Lubbock vs. Amarillo mostly because all my close friends were still back in Amarillo when I was in Lubbock.

Any home is what you make of it. (And keep in mind, too, that people are more apt to be comfortable with what they are most familiar with. My experience with Houston is far different than the experiences of people who live there. We all have our own personal biases).

My friend had a head hunter find him those openings over there. Since I can't stand headhunters, I would look on the internet for companies in NZ and find a contact number, or find classifieds for over there.
