Man you hit it on the point.... So now we will get the "Oh so sorry" and then the "I'm so angry", but at the end of the day you will get no action.... These politicians will not do anything and the only way they will do something is when all of these mass shootings hits home, then and only then will they fight to make a change. T_Man
I do not believe I have seen any legislation proposed that would require a background check combined with a mental health evaluation. My understanding is that current legislation involves simply a background check. The vast vast majority of people and mass shooters sale through a background check.
I doubt if this happened to Ted Cruz's kids he'd change his position. He'd find a way to blame someone else for it.
There has been legislation to raise the age limit, ban large magazines, restrict the sale of these types of guns, and many many more attempts at gun control, including waiting periods - all shot down by conservatives. You can't with a straight face say background checks is the only thing that has been proposed.
Just let it happen to Cruz.....I mean the politicians are the ones that should be called to action. DD
Not arguing with you because you are probably correct. BUT, if the problem du jour is blaming mental health, then legislation needs to be passed to do extensive mental checks. If that is unacceptable then it's just another empty proposal.
https://www.congress.gov/bill/116th-congress/house-bill/8 Been on the docket for nearly 2 years the GOP Senators refuse to vote on it. DD
But this doesn't stop someone from getting a gun... Will they have laws at a gun show.... Will they have laws for the street sales.... Too many ways to get a gun now adays... T_Man
Right, it's a background check bill. Which, like I said, wouldn't have stopped Uvalde or pretty much any other mass shooting we could name.
My point is Republicans are supporting no changes which is bad. Additionally, Democrats proposals are so toothless they won't do anything meaningful. Which is also bad.
There are a lot of holes to plug for sure. And many ways to get a gun when one should not. But to say because one method doesn't stop people doesn't mean it's not worth implementing. You are going to need lots of bills to get this right, but how can you make any progress when you can't even take a baby step?
It would help, you can't solve for everything but you can start moving that needle, doing NOTHING is the problem. And you don't know if he would have passed the background check or not, so it might have. DD
The goal is not to stop any one killing. It's to reduce the number of killings overall. If even one person who doesn't pass a background check is denied a gun, that seems like a positive. What are your proposals?
Let them buy the Gun... But make it hard as HELL to get the clips and Ammo... TAX the living **** out of it and make it super expensive.... Like buying a camcorder for 40.00 bucks and the battery for 500.00 T_Man
You'll never get that to pass. But simply having a gun license with a mental health check and references would do a lot I think. Combine that with being able to trace gun ownership and treating guns like we do cars, and I think that would do a lot to cut down on these mass murders. No there is no cure all, but we can reduce the violence.
