Hayes is great against low post players, but he has difficulties against quicker perimeter oriented PFs...just like the rest of our PFs do. I get that you LOVE Chuck Hayes, but to not acknowledge his limitations is silly. But, I respect you swimming against the tide, that is not always easy around here. DD
I have no idea where you got this one from. He literally shut down Okur in the 06 playoffs and he has shut down Nowitzki a few times. He stopped Rasheed Wallace a few weeks ago against Detroit. I mean, outside of Small Forwards masquerading as Power Forwards, I don't know what players you are talking about. And I have never not acknowledged his limitations, I just stand by my theory that Chuck's defense is more important with the starters than his non existent offense. Luis Scola is a nose for the ball kind of player, he will get his points whether he starts or not and he will play poor defense regardless. On the flip side, it makes no sense to me to bring Chuck in to defend the other teams 2nd unit, which is probably why Rick Adelman has taken him completely out of the rotation. Why bring a guy who is limited offensively off the bench when your goal should be to build on the lead while the starters rest? You need scorers coming off the bench. And if the other 4 starters, Alston, McGrady, Battier, and Yao can't give you all the scoring you need, you are in trouble and a trade needs to be made. It's called Basketball 101. Maybe Rick Adelman should watch some of those "Better Basketball" DVD's...
Do they show FTs, or maybe layups? Could we send those to Chuck and his putrid shooting percentage from both of those areas? DD
The Free Throw shooting is a mystery even to me. He shot better than 70% in college and he never had such poor mechanics. I have a theory that he had some type of injury where he can no longer extend either his wrist/elbow or his knee. The missed layups is just blown out of proportion because of the number of shot attempts. Scola misses his fair share of bunnies, but his shots made from other spots offset it. And Chuck was converting most of those layups in 06 when McGrady was giving him those great looks.
[JCF]Don't Forget about Chuck new piece from our favorite Rockets Writer Jason Friedman about Chuck Hayes link MY GOD! I beat HayesFan to a chuck article
Chuck's still my favorite player on the team. I hope the Rockets can find a nice role for him, and he can break out of his weird mental funk on the offensive end.
great article! I hope Adelman uses Chuck against Aldridge for much of the night. Being a situational defender, tonight would be one of those nights that would require Chuck's services IMO.
He's not in a mental funk. He's just an inept offensive player. He is what he is, which is a low post defensive player, and he's great at that. That's his role.
I really don't like seeing Chuck playing too many minutes, but keeping him at 10-15 minutes is excellent for a player that doesn't have an offensive game. I love giving him spot minutes especially when Scola and Landry are getting owned because usually Hayes comes and puts the chains on whoever he is defending
I think Chuck regresses a little bit at both ends of the court. Maybe its the reduction of playtime. Now, any shot Chuck tosses up, I count it as a FG if the balls hits the rim.
But, Chuck used to be able to fairly consistently finish his layups around the rim and even do an occasional reverse. I think thats what he is trying to say. He was never great, but he was never as bad as he has been recently
When a guy goes from shooting 55% for his career to shooting 30%, I say he's in a funk. He panics when he receives the ball in the paint and he rushes his shots. I think with the sporadic minutes and infrequent touches in the paint, his confidence is at an all time low.
He doesn't have Tmac spoonfeeding him open layups anymore. Now that he has to work for his points, his ineptness is being exposed. He's short, not particularly quick, and basically has no offensive scoring talent. That equals into an inept offensive player. Plus he has no confidence in himself when doing a layup or at the FT line, he's just throwing it up there hoping to draw iron. I guess that's the mental funk durvasa is talking about but I see it as more he's settled to be what he is. My biggest disappointment in him is that he seems content in being what he is on the offense or at the FT line, I haven't seen any improvement at all. I see we are in agreement about his confidence, durvasa. But I say his high FG% in the past is from TMac hitting him for wide open layups on that little pet pick and roll they would do once or twice a game.
I posted this a week and a half ago. I don't think its just McGrady. Prior to this year, he always shot at least 50% from the field when he wasn't sharing the court with Tracy. Now it's down to the low 20s%. ----------------- ... Here's the breakdown in his FG% playing with McGrady and without McGrady on the floor each season he's been in the league (source).
