I got a few for you, and I consider these series the best of the best (in no particular order):
In bold are titles not mentioned enough in this thread and highly recommended.

    Action:
    Fullmetal Alchemist
    Cowboy Bebop
    Darker Than Black
    Gungrave
    Naruto/ Naruto Shippuuden
    Hajime no Ippo
    Gundam SEED
    Samurai Champloo
    Death Note
Initial D (First stage is probably the best one, out of four stages)

    Drama/ slice of life:
    Honey and Clover
    Suzumiya Haruhi No Yuutsu
    Eden of the East

I started Aoi No Exorcist and after 1 season it looks good so far.

If you're looking for a list, check out the top 100 on AnimeNfo.com and start there. They have lots of the anime mentioned on here.

Have you watched the newer FMA? I've only watched the original one, but haven't seen the redo yet.

It always amused me that Darker Than Black is basically split into 12 episodes of two parts. In America, they would just be hour-long episodes. In Japan, the half-hour time slot for anime is so sacred that they were forced to do half-hour episodes anyway. In any case, good show. Not my favorite, but damn good.

Gungrave is the only decent anime I know of that was originally based on a video game. My only problem with it in general is that the "present moment" frame story isn't nearly as interesting as the "backstory episodes" that make up more than half the series. But that aside, I really did enjoy it.

I really don't know anything about Initial D other than what I can look up online.

The Haruhi followup is on my list, as is Honey and Clover.

Eden of the East not mentioned enough? I thought I talked it up pretty good!

Well, we definitely have different tastes in OPs/EDs. Only one you posted I like is Death Note ED 2... and I actually prefer Death Note ED 1 better anyway.

Too bad half the ones I posted have been taken down for copyright reasons. I'd update the posts, but apparently they're too old to edit.

The Persona 4 anime felt really felt rushed by the end. So sad.

Gundam AGE has become decent and they're starting the Kio arc next week.

The overwhelming homosexual tendencies are part of what made Ouran amusing.

    As for the others...

Durarara!! is by the same folks who did Baccano! They have a very similar style. If you like one, chances are you'll like the other.

Claymore, Black Lagoon, and the Hellsing OVAs are all about the ultra-violence. The stories aren't bad, but they're all about getting your adrenaline pumping.

Personally, Cowboy Bebop isn't my favorite. A lot of people consider it the best anime ever made, but I have a hard time putting it that high. It does have possibly the best OST of any anime ever, and also has a great english lead voice performance by Steven Blum (Mugen in Samurai Champloo, Onizuka in GTO).

If I had to recommend any one of those for you to watch next, it would definitely be Ghost in the Shell. Truly a must-see. The original movie is great, and the two series are in many ways even better.

BTW, watched Mushishi yet? That's the only one I would possibly recommend more highly than GITS. If you haven't checked it out, do...

Claymore's actually got a good story or, at least, the premise is unique. It's actually inspired by the famous Polish series, The Witcher, same as the video game series.

Watched a few series based on this post.

If you like Cowboy Bebop, you'll like Samurai Champaloo. It takes a while to get going but it's got a pretty good storyline. Darker Than Black is above average.

Gungraved sucked hard. Extremely over dramatic and cliche.

I agree, but I think it starts to give in to power creep around the middle, after the male awakened being. Clare had that interesting power of being able to suppress herself, and then that sort of goes out the window in the latter half.

Also, not a totally original concept... Claymores are basically dhampirs, but with demons rather than vampires. And there have been a fair amount of those. Blade especially comes to mind from American comics, and in anime Blood+ and Vampire Hunter D.

Still, quite an enjoyable little show. I especially enjoyed the Teresa flashback arc (ep. 5-8).

    @AtheistPreacher

Not just the half-demon bit but also the evil vs. evil aspect.

The anime, btw, cuts off and deviates from the manga near the end of its run. The manga pulls out a lot more twists after the anime ends.

I'm sure it does. They almost always try to make a more conclusive "ending" to an anime when adapting an incomplete manga. And usually it's not very good. That's one of the reasons why the Hellsing Ultimate OVAs are way better than the original Hellsing anime -- the former deviated heavily from the manga, the latter was made after the manga was complete and is sticking very closely to the original story.

Actually, the Berserk anime is one of the few animes I can think of that didn't change the story to try to give the feeling of a nice wrap-up. Downside is that it's about as inconclusive as you can get.

Anyway, I do plan to plan to read the Claymore manga eventually... I've got scanlations through chapter 124 on my computer.
