The thing about Gotf which makes me despise it....is that the obvious interpretation of that film is the complete opposite of what the author ( yes, author. It's a semi-biographical story) actually intended.

To put it simply, Grave of the Fireflies, contrary to what you may think, is not supposed to be an anti-war film. At all. In fact, it's closer to the opposite, because what it's supposed to be is a paean to the good old days when the kids would obey their elders blah blah blah. The boy didn't listen to his aunt and buggered around, and well, ended up like he did. That disconnect between the intended message and the one that shows up in the film is too much for me to take it seriously as a result.

Aside from flat characters, blatant wish fulfillment ( and wish fulfillment is to me the single biggest problem with anime as a genre and I could elaborate on that a lot more if anyone cared), and mother of god over the top fanservice, absolutely nothing at all.

And dear God, how did I forget Monster? Watch it already.

Toradora was 10 points up with a minute left towards becoming my favorite rom com and top 5 anime ever...and then the last two episodes happened. Still really, really good.

Yeah the last two episodes wasn't exactly what I expected but it ended with a completed story and on an up note. Out of curiosity what is your fave RomCom ever?

Like I said, it's probably the most glacially slow anime ever, especially at the very beginning. Very little happens until episode 4 or 5 or so, and it takes even longer for things to really start moving.

Try watching at least until the episode when Yoshii (the traveler in orange who wears a hat) meets up with a hooker. If you're not somewhat intrigued by then, you may as well give it a rest. It does pick up after that point, but hey, there are lots of other things to watch. My favorite show doesn't have to be everyone else's favorite...

I think you and I must have similar tastes. This is a nice list. I like the Monster recommendation below as well.

    FWIW...

Ouran High School Host Club is the only show for me that might actually beat out GTO for laughs. It's close, though. GTO is a sentimental favorite of mine, it's one of the first series I watched all the way through. It still holds up well. But if you haven't seen Ouran, give it a shot.

If you like Mushi-Shi, you should definitely see Kino's Journey. The former is slightly better IMO, but the latter has its own charm.

As for GitS, have you seen Moribito and Eden of the East? Those are the other two major shows by the same writer/director, both excellent. Moribito is one of my very favorites, along with GitS. Then there's Ergo Proxy, which is a great sci-fi show, even though it can get a little pretentious at times (something which GitS does a better job of avoiding).

While I'm here, since you mentioned you've read some manga, I'll just say that Berserk and Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou are still my two favorites, and they could not be more opposite...

Brotherhood follows the manga. The manga is better. Brotherhood is better.

No I'm still working on TWOGK and Free... and they both work fine... it's only watamote

edit: okay so it's working on the computer but not my tv or iphone... maybe I am signed in wrong or something. I'm going to try again and see if it works on the tv.

For newcommers it starts of as a bit confusing because they don't ease on to everything like brotherhood, but I think the original is much much better.

Brotherhood is aimed at a younger audience. Everytime there is a serious moment where you begin to feel the emotions tense up over something dark, they ice it and have the dumb anime expressions out of place. I am fine with them, but they can't be littered over everything thats serious.

Also, just Started Attack On Titan (now done up to Episode 15, can't wait for the new one) its the type of anime I really wanted to see. I'm surprised with how violent and dark it got at some points though.
