Though Luck's decision is financially risky, it's his own to make and he owes absolutely no one an explanation. I think it's pretty presumptuous of some of you to be calling it a dumb choice.
Fair point, though it would depend on how it's structured (I don't believe it's all up front) and how the lockout ultimately effects it to make up for the year of salary he forfeited while sustaining multiple shoulder separations. I actually believe the guranteed money is backloaded into future years. Edit: Here's a neat little article about the elusiveness of these "guarantees" - Stafford's is really more like $17 mm, suspect Bradford's is similar: http://adamjt13.blogspot.com/2009/05/matthew-staffords-contract.html
Luck's stock is at its all time high...the #1 pick, it can only go down. Also, with a new CBA will there be a new structured rookie scale that will limit how much owners can throw at these guys? I know the owners have been calling to get money back and limiting the rookie scales has been a much talked about topic
Unless the new CBA drastically changes the salary structure of the NFL, the money saved from a rookie scale will just go to existing players. More money to pursue free agents and resign existing players.
I'm just glad Harbaugh is bolting. There's no way Stanford or Luck has the same type of success they had this past year next season. Our game in Palo Alto just got much easier.
Bizarre - I had no idea guaranteed didn't actually mean guaranteed. That's just messed up. It looks like Bradford's contract has $24MM absolutely guaranteed and the other $26MM in the fake guarantee, and then there's another $28MM (I think) in non-guarantees that I don't know what that involves. http://www.about-knowledge.com/sam-bradford-contract/
why not? Standfors improved every year and i'm not exactly sure, but i'm sure their recruiting has got a boost
They had a good recruiting class last year and they're going to have another good one this year as well but Harbaugh is the one that built all that and turned Stanford's program around. Stanford has improved every year because of Harbaugh. He led his team to 4, 5, 8 and 12 wins respectively since 2007. If you lose the main guy that built all that, called the plays, recruited etc. chances are you're going to struggle. I'm not saying that Stanford can't repeat their success but I personally doubt they will. You can't take losing a HC of Harbaugh's magnitude lightly no matter how good Luck is or what players they have.
Yep. If he has a problem going to Carolina, can the 49ers make a deal with them in the next week or so before the deadline?
Harbaugh was leaning towards going this whole time. If he was going to link his return with Harbaugh, he would have just waited before announcing it.
Being an NCAA QB definitely requires work, for sure. Being a regular college STUDENT doesn't require as much work. The comment was about the people making the demographic of people opinions, not at Luck. I was admittedly douchy but not that serious, since I did mention having a college LEGACY counts for something too. Yeah thats a big part of it. Mentioned plenty already, I think the football risks are considerably more than in other sport. A high school baseball player not entering a draft and going to college stands a chance of slipping due to performance, but will probably be for sure at least HEALTHY 2-3 years later. Adrian Peterson while not a consensus #1 pick, he even barely made it out of college alive.
