This Texan team does not need the false hope of the playoffs... We need to realize we are a bad team and I'm afraid if we sneak into the postseason ownership will ignore the issues that are plaguing us.
Ah yes, I can see what you mean. Point well taken. True. I wasn't saying that this was the path to take rather I was looking at hypothetical outcomes if they were to dismiss a coach who took them to the playoffs. I'm a firm believer in Murphy so I can see how making such a move can have dire consequences and leave them in a far worse position. It's like Bush going into Iraq and ignoring Powell's advice "If you break it, you own it". I'm not sure the two situations will be identical. Those baseball fans were angry because of all the losing that followed. Crane knew he would get away with doing that because when all is said and done, Houston baseball fans really had no choice but to accept what he was shoving down their collective throats. It wasn't like they were going to become Texas Rangers fans. As for a total slash and burn, I just don't know. Maybe McNair could pull the same stunt because the Texans don't have the same longevity as did the Astros. I do believe you can do something like this with baseball because that sport utilizes a farm system for player development. Plus your fortunes aren't tied to one single player as is in football. In baseball, you can miss out on a pitcher or a reliever and it won't carry the same consequence compared to in football where if you miss out on a QB or pass rusher you can actually set your team back years. Player evaluation and acquisition is much more inflexible in football compared to baseball so McNair wiping the slate clean as did Crane could set them back not just years but decades if someone not as good as Luhnow is doing this for McNair.
The point wasn't really about any specific moves or burning down the Texans and starting over. It was that good management is about doing what's right for the success of the team and not what is right for PR purposes. Taking into account the bad PR or second guessing that might occur if the Texans fire or don't fire their coach would be an example of bad management. No offense, but this is absurd. Decades? Really? Rosters essentially turn over entirely in about 5-7 years in the NFL minus a few players. Nothing they do today is going to affect the Texans' 2035 team. If anything, the NFL has proven that turnarounds are far quicker than a sport like baseball where you have to have years of good drafts and a lot of patience to rebuild a dead franchise.
If you make the playoffs, you automatically pick after all the teams that did not, no matter record. So, we'd be picking at #20ish, I believe.
Going 6-10 and making the playoffs would be a monster screw-up. Miss out on all the top QB's and get slaughtered in the playoffs.
Luck can take the whole year off. This Texans team is still bottom 5 in the league. Luckily we have the Jags and Titans around us so we can squeeze 2-4 wins a year. I would rather see this team clean house and figure it out the tough way instead of getting by and celebrating a trash division title. Our remaining schedule will def make sure we will be out of any playoff race by early December.
Guys, guys, guys......you worry too much. We're not going to win the division and we're not going to make the playoffs. If you're still worried about it, go back and watch the defense in the games against ATL and MIA. It will put your mind at ease. I promise.
I see it... I see it like a mountain I'm standing in front of and I like it. The Texans will win the division with a sub .500 record. They will then beat a middle of the road wildcard team in the first round. (ie Buffalo, NYJ, Miami etc). Next they will play the best football this city has seen in years and defeat a superior opponent in the AFC Divisional Round. The Texans will then ride that wave of momentum to a narrow victory in the AFC Championship Game. The table will be set for one of the greatest stories is in NFL history. JJ Watt will sack Cam Newton five times in route to earning the Super Bowl MVP and solidifying himself as God's gift. The Texans return to Houston as the 2016 Super Bowl Champs. Oh, what a day that will be. Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Vince Lombardi Trophy. Victory at last, victory at last, Thank God almighty there's VICTORY at last! Spoiler
You should care less about wins and losses and this team playing better. Majority of the players on this team are going to be there next year. They need to improve. They need to play better. If they play better and then win the division, they rely less on the draft next year. If they play better but still lose games, they have better draft position to fix their holes next year. Teams like Baltimore and San Diego are perfect examples. They might end up with top ten picks but they are far better than their records say.

You don't f with lacerated kidneys.... then again, I bet there's significant kidney damage that a lot of players have after games (they just don't always look for it).
