Aware of the genetically physical superiority of Yao Zhiyuan and Gong Fengdi (Yao Ming's mum)'s son, Shanghai Sports authorities gave Yao's family 10000RMB each year (not 100% sure about the amount) to buy nutritional products ever since Yao was born. That was a large sum of money in the 1980s, and even in the 1990s.

China's sports system is different from that in US. In China, potential athelets are sent to specialized training schools at an early age. The facilities and accommodation there are paid by tax payers. I mean, did Kobe Bryant spend a single penny of American government's money as he played all the way into NBA? No. That's why Wang Zhizhi was not tolerated when he refused to play for his country, not to mention he was a soldier who should do whatever he is commanded to do. Actually it was sort of unbelievable to see that the government, the army and the Bayi club took him back without any punishment.

And there are things more important than money. So that the Rox pay Yao much money doesnt mean other parties dont have a say on this.

Anyway, ff everything goes well, Yao will be healthy enough to play the Olympics. He would not be ostracized if he is not fit for the game unluckily. It is the 2000's, not the 1950's or 60's. The cultural revolution was over. The overwhelming majority of Chinese basketball fans would prioritize Yao's fitness over the Olympics. End of discussion.
