Air Force One Charters for 40 friends aren't rich people spending their money. They are spending ours!

Then again I don't have any basis for comparison to what previous administrations and wives did. It does seem rather glitzy/outlandish
in the midst of the currently economic climate.

White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs told reporters that the first lady will pay her personal expenses — as will the friends who are traveling with her.

Pardon me for not being up on what the wingnuts are whining about this week, but what does Clinton's wedding have to do with anything?

It wasnt in a government facility, and afaik wasn't bankrolled by the gov.

Technically, if the President isnt on the plane, it isnt Air Force One.
    :p

List of presidential daughters marriages, note how many were at official gov locations(Camp David, White House)

god knows I shouldnt actually try to really answer a thread like this, but I was feeling froggy. :(

If you had actually read the post, you would notice that they didnt list Clinton under the presidential daughter weddings, the event simply gave them the idea to write the listing of past ones.

Basso, my point remains...what does it matter how much it cost?

it's unseemly, first, given current economic realities for much of the country. as a stand-alone item it's less remarkable, but taken in concert with the other items i mentioned, it's indicative of a certain "marie antoinette" attitude amongst the current "ruling" class.

plus, there of course were tax payer dollars involved in security, secret service, etc. some of these costs would remain in any wedding chelsea had, but had the clintons chosen an easier to secure site, and a smaller scale, those costs could have been mitigated somewhat.

but my larger point is the first, adn i find it highly ironic that republicans, or at least the tea party, are now the party of the common man.

So you think it's unseemly for people to spend their money because many people in our country are suffering? Do you realize what would happen if everyone stopped spending more than the minimum necessary amount right now because of how "unseemly" it is?

Are there suddenly no rich republicans? I didn't get that memo.

I actually read the post and find it odd to compare the locations of weddings of daughters of presidents who got married while daddy was in the White House to the daughter of a man who left it 10 years ago. Hey you brought it up, not me, in your attempt to deflect criticism about the topic.

there's no attempt to deflect criticism because the criticism is asinine. do you believe it is your right to tell people how they spend their earned money?

    Here's what was writ:

    1. "It wasnt in a government facility..."

    TRUE

    2. "... wasn't bankrolled by the gov."

    TRUE

    3. " Technically, if the President isnt on the plane, it isnt Air Force One."

    PLAUSIBLE

    4. " List of presidential daughters marriages, note how many were at official gov locations(Camp David, White House)"

    ?

There were three attempts to deflect criticism and then this fourth item which is tangential because Chelsea's dad is no longer in office yet it seems to be brought up in defense that they didn't use an official government location.... like others did (while their dad was actually president).

"With Chelsea in mind, we look at the children of former presidents, who married while their dads worked in the Oval Office." R2K wonders if I had read it and I wondered if he had read it.

it's hilarious how all you little neo-con wanna-be's act like it's only democrats who engage in acts of conspicuous consumption. hypocritical, but par for the course.

did barbara bush's comments regarding katrina evacuees at the astrodome indicate a certain "marie antoineete" attidude too?

"What I'm hearing, which is sort of scary, is they all want to stay in Texas. Everyone is so overwhelmed by the hospitality. And so many of the people in the arena here, you know, were underprivileged anyway, so this is working very well for them."
