look at next picture, only Bev and Parson may run the break. I guess the assignment of Harden and Howard is to protect the backyard, not running break.
Disagree. I appreciate OP's analysis -- it's a good one. That statement merely answered the question a lot on the GARM were harping at: if McHale was mad at Lin after the game for not running the play they designed, why have him in at all? Apparently the play was to run the fast break and seal the win (as OP pointed out, 10 sec left on the clock, if we miss our shot, could still lead to a bad scenario for us) OR call timeout if fast break was not available. McHale could have called the TO and didn't -- when he saw fastbreak was not a good idea, he should have called TO, but hey, McHale is a bad coach. Lin could have called the TO and didn't -- he got greedy and thought he could go for the fastbreak. Nope, he should have called TO OR passed to Parsons, though I think he thought the pass would be too risky. Lin messed up bad here. What I liked about OP was that he pointed out a lot of mistakes by other players too, both in their defensive scheme and other matters that could have changed a lot, like Dwight setting a better baseline pick. I still put blame in the order of Lin first, McHale second, but it is nice to see it all laid out because we often forget that when shiet goes wrong, it isn't because of one player necessarily -- it's a host of things that ALL go wrong. We designed and executed that play very poorly, Lin worst of all.
There is the analysis section. But at some point it is necessary to reach a summary conclusion. And it's not wrong to conclude, "Lin sucks". And use an expletive as a literary intensifier. Although, I don't completely believe that. I think he'd be fine on a pressure-free non-contending team, out of the spotlight. He's one of these players who would do fine on a team that does not require what is referred to as "good nerves" and disciplined execution. You might classify him with those in the dumb chuckers category, in that way. He can contribute to a .500 team, but not be trusted to do so in crunch time for a contender.
Seeing chandler there calling for the ball just kills me. I didn't realize he was right there. Lin should've just passed it. Must not have had his head up. Depressing
He simply didn't protect the ball. Mo Williams was with him the whole way, even as he came down with the rebound.
In games 3 + 4, Lin's decision making was fine - it the sloppy execution which resulted in disasters. First time watching those mistakes was gut wrenching. The second time watching those errors, they get lost a bit in a sea of other mistakes by other players. In fact, in close games like this, there were many, many mistakes by everyone, horrible ref calls, and chances to catch up by both teams in regulation and in OT.
OP is a lof, who is making a list of possible reasons/excuses. Fair enough. But let's balance that out with an analysis of the fails: 1. Lin does not call time out, as appropriate to the game situation. 2. Lin does not pass out to Chandler. 3. Lin loses court awareness of the location of his own man, Mo Williams (who, again, was trailing him the whole way). 4. As a PG, Lin fails to protect the ball (to speak in general of his caliber as a ball handler). These are questions of character, in the sense they indicate that he lacks certain functionality (intelligence, court awareness, etc.), and is likely to repeat these mistakes in the future.
I just don't see a clear path or easy break on that play. Therefore, according to what we're told, the play should have been to call a time out. I totally agree that McHale also panicked and didn't know what to do, hence he did nothing. I'm OK with a pass to Parsons there. It takes a few more seconds off the clock before he can either be fouled or get across the line. Maybe I just misread the OPs intention but it seemed like a lot of focus on what everyone else did wrong. If so that's on me
Repped, i appreciate this analysis instead of reading every other posts/threads that has the follwing "**** lin" "i hate lin" "lin sucks" "lin is an idiot" etc etc Yes we can all agree (as a lin fan) that he went full r****d on that play but why are yall trolls bashing on him for making an obvservation/analysis? Aren't we all here to talk about the Rockets play, analyze play, and critique players (poor play)? last time i checked this forum is called clutchfans not bashingplayersFans
Since we're playing the blame game, can I blame Daniels also for not being a better defender so he could have stayed on the court down the stretch?
I think I am most concerned about 3: 3. Lin loses court awareness of the location of his own man, Mo Williams (who, again, was trailing him the whole way). He just completely "forgets" about Mo Williams. This sort of error "exposes" or is a true signal of an underlying, essential weakness.
Agreed 100%, He DID forget about Mo Williams. That's on him. But I still don't understand why McHale didn't call the timeout. Especially after watching the Doc Rivers video. Observer-coaching.
I think the reason McHale put Lin in, was because he still not trust Troy at the defensive end at this time. If Rockets was in the offensive position, Lin would be on the bench instead. However, it is always easier to say it after things happened. Leaving troy in the game might give us a complete different result.
Saw this in the post game interview: JEREMY LIN It shouldn’t have been in overtime in the first place. I should have held onto the ball and called timeout. (what happened on that play exactly?) I just got the ball underneath and I saw a lot of players and thought they were either going to come trap me or put me in a tough situation so I needed to move along the baseline. I just wanted to try to get out somewhere away. Whoever hit the ball away from behind, I didn’t see them. But that’s on me.
Exactly, and I remembered that. Again, he doesn't have a freakin' clue about where his own man is, Mo Williams.
Why Mchale sub in Lin? 2pt lead with 33.7 sec left is not safe at all , if rockets milk the clock without score pts, it left 10 sec to Blazer to make the last shoot, could be a 3pt kill. Mchale sub in Lin in order to run a fast break, if there is a clear chance, it would potentially seal the game. ============================== That's so funny and I just can't stop laughing at all. Did you even brother to check that Lin played in the TO also? Oh you forgot to check this : Lin was NOT involved in the TO for any offensive posessions, he was sub in for Daniels ONLY for the purpose of defense. Why you may ask, is Lin suddenly becoming the next Tony Allen was McHale was really that insane? Anyone has half a brain will understand this : Lin basically sucked on offense the whole game, that's why he got pulled early in the 4th, but as comparing to Daniels, Lin should be much experienced (at least McHale thought) on defense and understand how to react in the playoff to a rookie. McHale is hoping Lin to run a fast break? Give me a freaking break. McHale is dumb, but at least he is not dumb enough to forgot what happened in G3 how Lin ran that fast break with 50 seconds left.
From he said, it sounded he realized many people were out to get/trap him, so tried his best to get away from them by going to the baseline. But still end up losing the ball. Should have called time out. But at the same time in the previous game, people were calling out for his head when he went for a layup instead of dribbling out the time clock. Anyway, its always easy to point out things after the fact and say which decision would have been the best.
Stop embarrassing yourself, look at the GIF. Both Bev and Parsons NEVER MOVED, and Parsons was standing there at the sideline, opened his hands and expecting Lin for a pass. Stop your laughable fast break theory.
