Thank you for this post. 4 years is a long time. significant progress was made in this time. A part of me wishes Van Gundy would have just accepted an extension and continued his work. It is over now- and I look forward to Adelman developing my team further....
I wonder if marketing had any part in the whole thing? I mean they had to give away seats to the Red Rowdies to get the Toy box to have any energy. Maybe Les looked at how rabid the Sacremento fans were when Adelman was there and wants some of that. DD
I doubt it... Sacramento was selling out games for HORRIBLE teams that Gary St. Jean was coaching. The Rockets were drawing 9,800 fans a game early in 1993 (the year after a 55 win season).
A big part of it was to purge the roster of the Mo Taylors and Cato type bad contracts... but they also forgot to add enough back.
dada i'm sorry to see the masses dump on you cause you're obviously as big a rockets fan as they come, but honestly you had this coming to you. big time. i freaking love jvg as the rockets coach but a tiny part of me is glad we let him go so hopefully the b****ing will stop. now i'm kinda thinking it won't anyway. i think we have better posts out of you than vspan rules and jvg sucks, so here's to a new year.
Here is my opinion on a rather interesting offseason to say the least. Just wanting to say I am one of JVG's biggest supporters ever, and still to this day, do I think JVG could and would of done a better job than I believe Adelman will ever do, mainly because I feel strongly defense will always win championships, and you can't coach your way out of a strong defense, but you can always find a way to slow a high powered offense. I believe had the Rockets had a better starting PG and PF, the Rockets would still be playing in the playoffs till this very day. Would that mean JVG would be back for next season still, I don't really think so. The fact was during the playoffs Yao pretty much got controlled on the offensive side of the ball on 1 on 1 coverage, Yao Ming couldn't do anything against Boozer defensively,T-mac settled for too many jumpers in like 5 of the 7 games, Tmac let AK and Matt Harpring bully him on the defensive end, Luther Head thought once the regular season was over the season was over, Howard was back to last years Howard, Rafer Alston was being Rafer Alston no suprise there, Chuck Hayes was Chuck Hayes, Shane Battier was Shane Battier he usually is in playoffs. Now with all that said 95-98% of the people here are Rockets fans, and JVG or not the people with have the coaches back. Least myself personally I have nothing against Rick Adelman, and will support him, but that doesn't excuse the way the Rockets handled the firing. But since the firing did take place I am glad it took place before the draft, and the time you can sign players, so Rick Adelman can bring in some players who he thinks can help this team "REALISTICALLY" not Mike Bibby, or Rashard Lewis. But the only real truth is the Rockets aren't going anywhere farther than they did this season unless Morey and Alexander bring in some better players.
Hehehe... We do need better players. But we did have some talent we could have developed. It would have been nice to see JVG one more year. But it will be interesting to see what Adelman can do. Looking to the future.
Haters are everywhere, I can't worry about them, but there are some guys I have been discussing basketball with on this board for years, and if they give an honest take without throwing personal insults around I will listen. Sherlock comes to mind....... But the people that are just bitter that JVG got fired, and want to vent in this thread by slamming me, meh.....I don't pay much attention to them. We just didn't agree on JVG and they are now taking their frustrations out..... DD
Yes, I agree with that. Les and JVG did not get along, and that always ends badly for the employee. DD
Ohh yeahh- I recall the Rockets trading Mo Taylor for Moochie and Vin Baker-I recall New Orleans offering P.J. Browne for Taylor.....Didn't Cato go with the trade that got us T-Mac? Purging expensive - long term contracts took a long time-Rudy's past deals cost Van Gundy team development time........
First of all, I love Rocket Red Kool-Aid. Taste really good with Popeyes spicy chicken. Like Sherlock, I have been here for ten years and this board is so split into two camps. But unlike Sherlock, I think JVG made the board the way it is. I am sorry if people get rubbed the wrong way, but JVG being who he is, the demeanor, being from NYC, etc, set the board back big time. The problem to me is that the majority resented him bringing in ex-Knicks. The majority resented the fact that in the interviews I posted when he spoke to the NY radio station, he was more of what many of you wanted. He was upbeat. Joking. And many of you thought that he was a New Yorker through and through and resented it. I am sorry. But the Civil War wounds don't heal overnight...even after 150 years! The fact of the matter is that he was a great coach who didn't do the smiling, the joking, the drinking that most of you would associate with being a "cool" guy. In case you don't pay attention to how people are around here, Joe Torre is as depressed as JVG when he speaks to the media (maybe more nowadays). So is Lawrence Frank. Isaiah Thomas just happens to be a total idiot so he smiles no matter what. Have you seen a Larry Brown interview? That guy is the most negative person on the planet...and thats after they win a championship! People around here who are professionals are just intense, intense people. And that gives the NYC reputation as "tough and gritty". Doesn't come off in a city where people are so laid back that they arrive to games in the 2nd quarter and leave in the middle of the 4th. JVG would never make it in a town like LA. Its the same there. He is a different species and everything he does is with the objective that the end of the world is within 2 hours so we are preparing for the very worst. DaDakota made it worse because (in my opinion) looked like he was rooting for failure to then say "I told you so". He wasn't the only one, though. EDC, Luffy1, ROckets03 and many others were in the same boat. What I give DaDakota credit for is that he was around even during the winning streaks unlike the others I mentioned. He did not hide. You have to applaud him for taking his medicine when we were there to rub his nose in it especially when Yao was out and Gundy did the best job in the NBA. I love the guy. In all seriousness, I think he is going to win multiple championships if he coaches again. Maybe he wasn't the coach best suited for the team. But I look at Utah and we smack the **** out of them for 7 games and they won by 4pts. We hit open shot (Rafer, Head) and we probably win in 6. But whatever. The leader gets the blame. You can't fire the players. And I said that he needed to make the second round, game 6, to keep his job. Didn't happen. I have no problems with him being gone...though I would of gave him another opportunity because Adelman is a lateral move. Adelman will create more offense for us. And we are all going to love seeing all that offense. But what I am afraid of is that the tenacity JVG instilled in this team will be gone come playoff time. The diving on the floor. The hands in the shooters face. The slapping at the ball over and over. Those are the marks of a team that can destroy another even if they don't score 100pts. I am rooting for Adelman. He isn't going to smile and joke around like most want, thats for sure. Just please, give the man a chance before the stupid "Fire Adelman" thread starts.
I think the fundamental divide is between those who prefer something rational and based in reality rather than two line superficial analysis and a kneejerk reaction. GATER wanted JVG gone but he's at least smart about it. Others? Not so much, for reasons specified in this thread.
I know I am a bit late but I never read this thread and this line really stuck out. You are being disingenuous now. You repeatedly said over the past year that the team underperformed this year and, even with the injuries, they should have had more wins and that JVG was responsible for them falling short. Repeatedly. I did not even want JVG in the first place but once he got here I saw that he coached well during the season and that is why, at the time, I argued against you saying that they had more wins than they should have had, for every blown win against bad teams they had upsets against good, etc.. So maybe now that he is gone you can say he did a good job, but during the season you said they should have won more and underachieved. For the record, you never offend me or get me upset...I just think you try too hard to fit some bbs person that you have created for yourself. That is why I am only half in arguments with you...just like I don't really argue wth T_J politically.
Phew, you're still around. I had become saddened that perhaps you were over stalking me and had moved onto someone else.
Rimmy, The difference is that while I can agree that he did a decent job in the regular season, it does nothing to change my belief about his abilities to lead this team to a championship. Which has always been my point. All I care about is the Rockets team and how they were progressing torwards that championship, and IMO, the style they were playing and their approach to the game was not going to get it done, thus my desire for a new coach.
