I usually hate frivolous lawsuits, but sometimes I wish I could file one. Corporations always try to walk over the consumer, its time they were held accountable.
Was this Airline trying to walk over this guy by making him cover up his shirt? It was the people in the plane that were complaining...so it was consumers walking over other consumers. Jetblue actually provided a shirt to him to cover up his shirt. Now of course its silly that people would be uncomfortable with arabic on a shirt...but c'mon..240k for that??? The beauty of competition is that if you don't like a company, use someone else's goods or services.
that argument doesn't work, he can't forget/go back in the past, the embarrassment happened. you can argue about the amount, but the competition argument doesn't work here.
Maybe avoidance of silly lawsuits by doing everything right the first time can be a differentiator for some airline. Then, while the likes of AirTran and Jet Blue are crushed under the weight of punitive damages for discriminating against people, some chivalrous airline can undercut their prices because they treat customers with respect. I thought the amount was low.
right. so the the airline, in accordance with the wishes of its consumers, acted in this matter. and thus the airline, and its consumers, will have to pay the price. that being said obviously 240k for a tshirt is ridiculous. 240k for the family traveling for national seems about right.
But the damages are punitive, not compensatory. With punitive damages, the goal is to punish - not to fairly compensate the aggrieved party. So the dollar figure is based on what would be considered punishment for the airline, not how much banning a t-shirt is worth.
Store owners profile all the time. Maybe I should stop bathing and shaving, get some clothes from the trash can and dare them to kick me out!
Well, you'll need to go on to show how their reaction is tied to your race, religion, gender or other protected class. The airline got in trouble because of the obvious ethnic discrimination involved.
kind of. in a settlement in which jetblue clearly denies wrongdoing...so how can these be punitive damages? post
I don't blame the airport security people. They were just doing their jobs. That guy was just trying to make some trouble. I'm Arab and I would never even think of doing something so blatantly stupid.
Agree with the decision in principle, but it leaves a sour taste in my mouth. The money (after lawyer fees and time lost wages) should go to the anti-defamation league or some another charity. Punish the airline for their stupidity but don't reward this guy so much. Well, I guess he won't be getting a stimulus tax break. I was thinking of this thread too when I saw the yahoo article. Time flies doesn't it?
You know part of me is willing to defend this guy and rights but then there is a part of me that says hey...how about you tell your people to stop bombing hotels, killing civilians, terrorizing Israel, flying airplanes into buildings etc. I still have not heard any major imans or muslim leaders come out AGAINST radical islam since its become mainstream....that should tell you something right there. I think we should just play dodge ball....all the conservative anglo christians on one side and all the radical islamists on the other and game on!
Perhaps it shows that you haven't done a lot of research on the subject and that you incorrectly assume that because you haven't heard something that it means it doesn't exist?
