This isn't true. We have like a 30 page thread arguing how doctors and dentist had to cheat. Its not only students from this country either.

Yes, in-class essays are the way to go. When I have taught, though, I have had to make concessions with grammar because holding a class to a proper grammatic standard for a 30 minute essay is pretty much impossible. At that point, I was lucky to get some kind of a semblance of critical thinking. If I got great thinking represented through bad grammar and speeling I was happy. Great htinking with great grammar? Grading nirvana.

Whoever said writing is not important in the real world is an idiot. It is only "not important" in that too many people have neglected it and are reall bad at it and, as a result, reduce the overall skill of our country in communicating both written and verbal. Have fun in your ignorance.

As has been mentioned, I can tell within a few lines of an email - or post on a bbs or whatever - just how much of my time a person is worth and I certainly am not unique in this. People do not realize how much they get demoted into class levels and intelligence through their communication, the way they carry themselves, etc. to the point that their "professional" career can and will be stymied.

Oh well, I was not surprised by this article but it is interesting regardless.

I wouldn't have dreamed of having someone else write something for me (not only for ethics but also for ability) but I nonetheless contributed to the overall problem with education in that I was lazy and knew that I could wait until the last minute and then throw somoething together with 50% effort that would then get an A. I am happy with my life and how I ended up but age certainly brings the regret that I was cheated by my education and by myself and that I could have and should have been more.

Re: the part in bold, I think they were making a distinction between 'communicating effectively' and actually writing a formal essay.

But as to the rest, yeah, I agree with you completely.

PS - were we supposed to point out your typos or were you just in a hurry?

I think the typos in the first paragraph were meant to be ironic.

    Does it really matter?

If they suck at the job they get after graduation they will be fired anyway.

A college degree is cool, but do people put that much emphasis on one?

I got mine, but have worked with and for guys that were very successful, multi-millionaires who dropped out.

    Too cool for school.

If you play the percentages when thinking this through, yes it does matter.

    How many millionaires are there.
How many have degrees compared to how many that don't.
How many people believe they'll be millionaires w/o a degree.
How many degree-less people are rich.
How do those poor degree-less people impact society.
    And so on.

    Let the flash flood begin!

It still matters to the people who earn theirs the right way.

Part of the reason you dismiss college degrees with lines like "it's cool, but does anyone really care" is that they are so easy to get now, largely because of the ridiculous number of people cheating their way through school.

I was in a hurry and I don't read my posts but still no excuse. Good point.

    Certainly not ironic.

I haven't read the whole thread, and I tried to rep you (You must spread some rep...), but I had to give you props somehow. The above is not only true, but eloquently stated.

    Thank you for this post.

    In school? Yes.

As a professional? No. What doctor do you know that writes a page worth of anything between their 30 patients they see a day?

You are a dentist Yonkers? Did you cheat as a pre-dent or are the cheaters eventually exposed and they don't make it to med/dental school?

I hope your essay writing is better than your reading comprehension or spelling (mosess), rookie.

edit: You are a doctor Yonkers? Did you cheat as a pre-med or are the cheaters eventually exposed and they don't make it to medical school?

Is that what you meant because the question is essentially the same and it makes no difference

Yeah, I noticed that too. At first I thought Malone's middle name must start with an S, but then I looked it up and his full name is Moses Eugene Malone. Still, I'm withholding a declaration of FAIL until I hear from Mosess himself.

For someone who writes for a living he is really boring. Ugh, half way through I just wanted to go to sleep. I would never pay him to write a paper for me.

If academia was more exciting, then maybe students wouldn't have to cheat.
