Cell phones were still invented here. A lot of the chipset that power these super advanced phones are made here.

He's not talking about who manufactures them, but who invented them. Heck, if you want to talk about folks that know cell phone technology, look to the Finns. :)

Wasn't electricity invented in the States?.. or was that just the light bulb?

And lets not forget, an American invented the slam dunk.. and Jackie Moon invented the Alley Oop.

Speaking of invention, I think WMD was invented by a prominent American.

Dr. Tyson's school analogy pretty much exemplifies why he is speaking with his heart rather than his head. He's not helping matters.

One thing to remember is any country that is a late adopter of technology is generally going to have better technology. For years the US (and still does, actually) used NTSC II color system for color TV. Of all the color systems it was the worst. Engineers said it stood for "Never The Same Color, Twice". But that's the system the FCC chose because, of all the systems available at the time, it was backwards compatible with BW TV. Soviet Russia used a better color system (Secam?) but mainly because they came late to the game so the better system was available to choose from.
