Speaking as someone who is not politically correct, I agree with you.

Is that any worse than the past eras using people with disabilities and deformities as circus freaks?

Every generation makes some stupid stuff famous. For every Tekashi69 there is a Kendrick Lamar.

People made them famous because people like seeing train wrecks that make themselves feel better about themselves. This has always been true regardless of generation. No one respects "cash me outside" girl. They laugh at her and some pity her.

People have been doing stupid things since the beginning of time. It only seems worse now because social media allows wider audience to find out about it.

Yup. I've noticed many of my conservative friends will post some screenshot of some rando tweeting about how they hate white males and use that to dismiss "leftist ideology". Social media is a great way for people who don't want to self-reflect on their views and hear opposing arguments to find the worst form of rhetoric from random people on twitter who could be very well be bots or trolls. It's ruining discourse and is allowing people to just do blanket strawmen of ideolgies they disagree with with and never sincerely understand people who disagree with them on certain issues.

I think there is a real problem with how we debate political and cultural issues. We look at them as too much of a zero sum game where any concession to the other side is at the cost of our own. Rather than thinking about what is better for society as a whole it is about winning / "owning" the other side.

For example using the LOF. Yes many of them were annoying but the anti-Lin fervor did get excessive to the point that people where proposing very one sided trades to get rid of him. Even worse where a lot of criticisms of him were racially tinged. Jeremy Lin overall was a mediocre basketball player he had a good impressive run but it wasn't sustainable. Like most players as other teams learned to scheme against him better and also injuries took a toll his numbers and importance dropped. That didn't mean he couldn't play basketball, should've never been on an NBA court just that he didn't have Hall of Fame talent that could last most of a career like the vast vast majority of people who play basketball even at the NBA are.

It was foolish to worship Jeremy Lin as the Asian Jerry West but it was also foolish to say that he was a cancer to a team and that it showed that Asians really couldn't play at the NBA level.

Exactly, he was one of the best playoff performers for that Portland Trailblazers team we played.

It's worse because our politicians choose short term gains for staying in power than doing what's right for the country.

Something like letting small businesses rot during the pandemic or not bailing out blue states is unheard of and now the norm.

We should've had a legit infrastructure bill in 09 but no one wanted the other side to win.

    Oh noes!

China is laughing at me. It is very important that China thinks I'm cool so maybe they'll invite me to sit at the same table at lunch with the other cool kids like Russia and Iran.

I'm devastated. China's opinion of me is vital to my self image.

You know who laughs at China? The independent, sovereign nation of Taiwan.
