Man, based on exit polling, Bo was the clear victor. There's only one explanation for all of this. DIEBOLD
I like American Idol. I don't follow the careers of these people afterwards, but the show itself is quite entertaining. Obviously, everyone on this board doesn't have the same opinion. That's cool. They'll probably change it a little next year and perhaps add original songs. That would realy make it good. The one thing that I like about AI, is that they are not forcing a genre of music on you. They play to the strengths of the talent. Kelly = pop Ruben = R&B Burrito = annoying as hell Carrie = Country Plus others in the top 10 will get record deals anyway. Perhaps a few on this board don't like it, because it might rob an oportunity for others older than 28. I don't see it like that at all. I don't always agree with the judges, but that is part of the fun. I'm like "F..ck them. They don't know what they're talking about".
No, because technical ability is overrated. Songwriting is where it's at. I can't think of anything more uninteresting musically than a virtuoso.
1. No, I would never try out for that. I don't care if my technical abilities are better than someone else's. 2. No, I wouldn't watch it. There is a significant difference between simply singing over someone else's music and having to perform your own music on your own instrument. The problem is that most of this takes very little overall discipline. These are mostly kids who have had very brief careers and were simply blessed with good looks and a good singing voice. There is nothing remarkable about that. And, having them do nothing but perform other people's music does NOTHING to make music better. It's cotton candy in a world that needs more vegetables. Now, if the contest was for songwriters, THAT I would watch. Conversely, I have little problem with Nasville Star. The resaon is because that is just how Nashville is. It is a music factory that turns out the same thing over and over again. Plus, the people on their have to write their own songs, perform them and most of them play an instrument. Many of them are significantly older and have spent a lot of time honing their craft. Unfortunately, as a society, we have very little respect for artistry. It is why the arts in America are dramatically under-funded. We're a flavor-of-the-week society when it comes to art. That makes for very bad art. In reality, it doesn't make for art at all.
There's sooooo much good music out there that doesn't find its way out because the band doesn't "look right" or because it's too edgy...or just because the opportunity doesn't pop up. And then there's American Idol.
American Idol isn't the cause, it's the result. I've never watched before but I tuned in this year because of Bo Bice. I keep trying to point out that this guy isn't just some kid singing other people's music, he's been performing for years, he writes his own songs, plays instruments. I say that every time when people bring up the lack of "artistry" in the show, and there is never a response to that. It's like aknowleding Bo's existence would kill your argument or something. It's getting annoying, we all know what you guys think about the show, hell I feel the same way about previous seasons and winners, but this thumbing your noses to the rest of us crap was tired weeks ago.
Yeah, and the only way he gets his shot is on a show singing other people's music. That's sort of the point. thegary summed up my "bitterness" well. When people with great talent and tremendous artistic integrity go completely un-rewarded while novelty acts find success through popularity contests with little or no artistic merit, you bet your ass it's frustrating. But, I pledge a vow of silence on AK/AI from here on out. No sense ruining everyone's fun.
Yes.. In the meantime, this song just hit #1 in the U.K. http://real-eu.stream.aol.com/ramgen/aol/uk/aol/music/prop/2005
Also, there was a surprise appearance by David Hasselfoff on AI last night. It doesn't get any better than that for a season finally.
Different strokes for different folks, I guess. I used to sing professionally, so I like watching how they do, and see if they are as good as I am, or better. The show does have its gay moments, obviously. But I'm fine with the winner getting a record deal worth 1 million. After that, it's up to the performer to keep that fan base up. Kelly did it. Ruben and Fantasia haven't. I don't see how this is different from any other reality prize. They all get a million. Why is there always animosity towards this one, especially when the talents have to actually perform.
