This is a must watch for anyone discussing politics, what America is all about and which direction American should be going into the future.

I am sure this is the wrong forum for this, but I feel this is relevant to the undertone of a lot of the debates going on here in D&D.

Not everyone is up on their history or has forgotten what they have learned in school--I include myself in this group. We can use this to discuss the series in relation to the current political climate.

"America: The Story of Us is an epic 12-hour television event (six 2 hour shows) that tells the extraordinary story of how America was invented. With highly realistic CGI animation, dramatic recreations and thoughtful insights from some of America's most respected artists, business leaders, academics and intellectuals, it is the first television event in nearly 40 years to present a comprehensive telling of America's history. Elaborate, ambitious and cinematic, America The Story of Us will take you into the moments when Americans harnessed technology to advance human progress, from the rigors of linking the continent by transcontinental railroad--the internet of its day--to triumphing over vertical space through the construction of steel structured buildings to putting a man on the moon. It is an intensive look at the people, places and things that have shaped our nation, and the tough and thrilling adventure that is America's 400-year history."

Just to get an idea of how cool this is going to be, there is a brief trailer video on the web site. So, set your DVR's!

Dispite America's flaws, the freedom to engage in intense political discussions in this country allows it to remain the greatest nation in the world and will remain a beacon of light for all other nations---and this documentary will make this case in grand detail.

(However, if I have broken some taboo on the board, I ask forgiveness in advance and please lock or move this thread as required.)

Only the history channel can make programming so great, that it actually makes you reconsider your career. Being an Axe man looks wonderful and full of adventure, I would pass on being el Jefe of the latin kings though.

No doubt I will be watching this.

We have a joke in my language, its roughly translated, "A Mosquito is sitting on the shoulders of a Hunter who is just chilling at a Hunting Lodge talking about his hunting trip. The mosquito has a few drinks and then starts bragging to his other mosquito friends, "Me and this Hunter just killed an Elephant!"

This probable didn't translate well, but it's funny as hell in Mulu.

The point, and I do mean this in very light jest TSchmal, is that Canada is a great place--but at the end of the day its security is based on that fact that they are merely "sitting" on the shoulders of the Hunter (America)."

Again, this is only meant in light jest. Whenever my liberal friends talking about moving to Canada, I can't help but think of this joke.

Oh yeah? What exactly is Canada sucking out of the USA (as a mosquito would)? I used to have a similar sentiment until I actually thought about it and discussed it with a Canadian I know up in Edmonton.

    It's not.

As much as you guys pile it on me, I find it humorous that you would be so offended by a little joke. :(

It all depends on WHY you want to leave America. :)

I will admit that after 9/11, I became very proud to be an American—because I felt it was an attack on Christians and Freedom.

It’s just that you gave the impression that you wanted to leave America because you don't like this country anymore. If this is so, then when people say that they want to leave America to somewhere like Canada, because it’s better--I get a little defensive and think of the “joke.”

Now, having said all that, I apologize for any offense taken my by joke.

It's just that I feel countries like Japan, Germany and Canada can allocate a lot more of their financial resources to entitlement programs--as opposed to military superiority. This gives the world the impression that they are a peaceful nation. I believe this is because they know that if they were to be attacked, American would not hesitate to come to their rescue.

IMHO, if American did not have to spend trillions upon trillions of dollars (over its history and adjusted for inflation in today’s dollars) to ensure that it’s national defense stays second to none—then we too could provide more entitlements and be considered a peaceful nation.

Unfortunately, somebody has to be the designated “ Leroy” from “The Last Dragon" Now, I am really dating myself.

Since, I am Indian, I am sure most of you are very confused about my loyalties. It basically comes down to this:

India's true name is Hindustan—Land of the Hindu’s. I am a Christian and therefore I feel that I have come home to a country that was created for me, my family and future generations henceforth—just like the first pilgrims.

However, I still am proud of my Indian heritage. I had a arranged marriage to a North Indian raised mulu, have Zee-TV and AsiaNET(for Mulu's). I love Hindi movies(subtitles) and watch DID religiously every Friday and Saturday (my CFO translates for me) at 6:00pm. Go Dharmesh!

I don’t believe you have to give up your ethnic heritage and culture, just because you are proud of being an American. I see NO conflict here and what's more--THIS is what it means to be an AMERICAN! Unfortunatly, the right wing fringe elements have as much trouble figuring this out as you guys. :(

And hence, why I am really looking forward to this History TV series!
    :)
