My solution: don't go to movies in theaters. Haven't been to a movie in the theater in a long-ass time. I'm finding that I don't miss it. I'd just as soon buy a Blu-ray and watch that. The last time I cared enough to go see a movie in the theater was the LOTR trilogy.
I live not too far from the Meyer Park AMC 16 that used to be 14 that is now closed. I remember when that opened it was nuts. There had never been a theater that large. Then it became a thug fest
Although I agree with much of what you say on this forum, you have BBS anger management issues like no other.
I haven't laughed that hard in a good while. Thanks! As I already said, I agree with you. I have this PS3 and 46" LCD for a reason, after all.
Some movies you have to see at the theater. Speed Racer, Beowulf, Transformers... Even if they're absolute crap, the eye candy alone and the blaring sound system makes it worthwhile. Because the movie is so loud, I plug my ears, and that blocks out most of the annoyances beyond having a lousy, foul smelling or obnoxious neighbor. I admit watching Speed Racer was a trip at the petting zoo, but I blame it on not being able to escape from a ****ty movie more than the crowd. I also rarely watch a movie that has just came out. You're just looking for trouble if you have low tolerance for crowds and epidemics. Clappers at the end of movies don't bother me either. Live and let live I guess..
Doesn't matter what you thought of Phantom Menace, you cannot deny the excitement you felt from the cheers when the Lucasfilm logo appeared on the screen, a theater full of laughs during a highly anticipated comedy, or the emotion resonating during the final act of the LOTR trilogy, or thunderous applauses after a film that got it right. That's something you can't find at home and it adds to the experience. The crying babies, cell phones and juvenile banter I can do without...but it just depends on what movie you go to. Usually you won't find that during the more mature movies. For all the negatives mentioned above as well as the higher prices, the positives still make it very much worthwhile to make trips to the theater.
I agree. The experience from a movie like Cloverfield can't be matched at home. That was truly amazing in a packed theater.
I agree totally with rhadamanthus and his rant. All that stuff is spot-on. I don't go to the movies except if 1. someone else is paying, or 2. it's a "theater-type movie." For example, 300 or Gladiator or even a quality comedy are movies I would see in a theater. The new Mr. Bean or Cedric the Entertainer movie? Well I wouldn't see those in the first place, but I really don't understand how people would pay to see that on the big screen. Waste of time and money. I still like the Angelika the best. Monday nights $6 for student admission, popcorn, and soda...can't beat that.
Hollywood Theater on Beltway (Pasadena) is the answer. You can get an adult evening ticket for about $5.75. Real good deal, fellas.
Do your theaters have the self-serve atm-like machine to buy tickets? I just use those and press the student button for a discount. It's not like the machine or anyone else verifies you. Not to mention there's NEVER a line at the machine, while outside there are 3 lines running 15 deep each.
You left out the part where finally everyone is into the movie, especially you, as it hits its climax - and then the teenagers start clapping? WTF ARE THEY CLAPPING FOR? ITS A ****IN MOVIE, NOT A PLAY, NOT A FOOTBALL GAME, NOT AN AWARDS CEREMONY. You can make fun of the black kids for talkin to the movie, but the kids that actually clap - there just isnt anthing dumber than that.
I just got out of college, and in Waco, it's usually college kids at the movies, and for the most part, it's kinda civilized. I hadn't gone to a movie in Houston since high school, but when I went last summer, at night, I couldn't believe I was saying to myself "damn kids". And I was only 21! Now I just stick to matinees. Oh and for some reason I went to the ticket machine and bought an adult ticket when everyone else in front of me bought kid ones. I guess I have some conscience. D'oh!
Yeah I cant stand watching commercials when I've already paid for my entertainment. Kinda like cable! I just leave the theater and walk around if the "movie watcher" network is still running.
i don't know the name of the theater i go to but it's on 290 just outside 610 and it is also $4 for adults before 5 PM. my husband and i caught the 4:50 show on monday for $8. not bad if you ask me. esp since some places at certain times charge that much for one person.
