Couldn't get into The Wire. Went 7 episodes into season 1, didn't get drawn to it. Mad Men, tried 4 episodes from season 1 and fell asleep in every one of them. Breaking Bad is my favorite drama, from purely a drama genre.
Anytime someone has to say "just give it four or five episodes or maybe a season and then you'll be hooked", it's automatically not going to be better than Breaking Bad in my book. And I've heard that line from nearly all of my friends who watch Mad Men. I somehow made it through five episodes and I couldn't get into it. Bor. Ing.
There's a lot of people who are ****ting on mad men like its crap and have either barely watched it or its just not for them. Mad men is an amazingly well done show, not as good as breaking bad, but certainly one of the best dramas in television history. I wouldn't fault someone for liking it more, they are enjoyable in different ways.
It took me most of season 1 to get hooked on Breaking Bad but I was immediately hooked on Mad Men the first time I watched it.
Thats pretty much ALL it is... a bunch of stories. They're just not about crystal meth, so that's why people tend to not pay attention or forget.
It is the fact that the stories are uninteresting. The main character is unhappy in his marriage and has no love for his kids. Boring. Another character is gay and in a shame marriage. Boring. There is a female character is struggling to get respect in a man's world. Boring. I only watched the first season but was shocked by how awful the show was. Then I realized actually nobody was watching the show and it was all buzz.
Can't believe I'm saying it, but I actually agree with Ziggy. Mad Men is a prime time soap opera. There isn't much of an underlying plot other than the character interactions.
I agree from the standpoint that you have to be exposed to all the characters for a certain amount of time to really appreciate the shows writing/acting. To me, that doesn't take away from the show as much as it adds to it. It took awhile for me to get into it as well. Its an ensemble cast in a period that isn't modern day. I think they do a phenomenal job of not only capturing the time period, but relating the same modern day stories that would plague any business/marriage/thirtysomething life to that time. I love Breaking Bad... I love GOT... and I love Mad Men. Its all good acting, good writing, good story telling.
I don't understand where the drama part comes in, the only thing it has going for it is likable leads.
Holy crap, after a year, finally!!!!!! <iframe width="560" height="315" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/JL9H-3p5HWM" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
