Normally I'd agree, since the Chekhov's Ricin has gone unused too many times before. But given that they made it the whole point of the cold open in 509 (originally instead of a dilapidated White house, it was going to be a CGI'ed empty lot--but that left Walt nothing to do in the scene, so they changed it to accommodate his recovery of the ricin)--for them to have wasted that valuable of screentime on a feint would probably end up as some uncharacteristically bad writing from Gilligan and team.

The attention given to the ricin has been huge. It was definitely worth having it in the cold opening. That said, it won't be ignored in the finale.

That or he's finally giving us the actual year of the show. Correct me if I'm wrong but they never actually said the show takes place in present time.

The biggest clues were the types of cell phones they have...but then again those flip phones weren't around in the 90s. Idk...just throwing something out there.

5 Hour Energy didn't exist in 1998. The show takes place from 2008-2010, roughly.

The cars they drive are pretty current, too.

    Epic ending.

They say Walter White is dead.
    They say Heisenberg is gone.
    What does he become now?

The timeline is "current". That hockey game was famous, huge comeback, ESPN Classic-worthy.

It definitely takes place in modern times, around 2008 like someone said. I can't be the 90s, too much technology. What others have mentioned, plus badger and skinny Pete play modern video games all the time in Jessie's house

Lydia is not in the '90s.

Lydia's fashion is most definitely around 2010. :) Plus, Stevia was not available in the US until 2008.

So, the Badgers made a big comeback. Could that mean Badger will save Jesse?

A good chuckle at the last episode being almost here and people are trying to guess what year the show is in.

I think it's another hidden little clue that Walt's about to make an incredible run in the last act.

The phones are frequently burner phones, which are cheap prepaid phones you usually pay $20 for, though the Hello Kitty phone given to Jesse by Saul might have been a smartphone.

Also, a lot of old people still prefer simpler phones.

Walt is going back to college to play for the Hockey team.

    It is brilliant.
