Luther's shot is certainly unconventional, but it's not as weird as McGrady's. That's probably why McGrady is such a streaky shooter.
i'm not sure what you mean. from what i see mcgrady has pretty much classic/conventional shooting form. compact, allowing him to shoot from all kinds of body positions. unlike luther, McG and any other shooter with similar form (kobe, flip murray, etc. ) don't have to pogo himself up with his legs in just the right direction (towards the rim) like luther must in order to have any hope of it going in.
McGrady always kicks out a leg when he's shooting. In fact, I'm surprised he hasn't kicked anyone in the face yet. When he's shooting free throws, his feet are all weird and facing odd directions. If you really want to talk about the correct shooting form, his feet should be parallel and facing the basket.
ok i see what you mean, i'll take your word for it as i don't really notice anything weird enough about his tmac's foot positioning while shooting to even pay attention. i'm talking more about form from the waist up. for conventional-form good scorers, their form from the waist up is "portable," so to speak, by that i mean it doesn't depend on what their lower body/legs are doing, in what direction they jump, whether they're turning in midair (turnaround j) etc like it does for luther. luther can shoot one way period: from a standstill facing the basket, pogo upwards, release, land a few feet in front. he can't vary his release, the direction he jumps, the direction he faces to start the shot (like in a turnaround j), all because of his weird, loopy, "non-portable" form.
And I can't even believe that is a point of argument. Luther is a far more consistent shooter than T-Mac is. T-Mac is the very definition of streaky. When Luther launches a jumper, I always expect it to go in. He may not have picture-perfect Steve Novak/Ray Allen kind of form, but he's easily the most consistent outside shooter on this team, playoff woes aside.
i agree with that, but i guess the whole point of that tangent was, luther will always be a player who depends on someone else to get him shots. and they'll be standstill, spot up shots. he'll never be able to create for himself and be a multi-faceted offensive threat, unless he somehow overhauls his shooting mechanics, ballhandling, and finishing ability over the summer (unlikely). if his spot up wide-open threes aren't falling, there's not much else he can do to on the offensive end to contribute.
^which is relevant because he's one of the main scorers off our bench, if not 'the' main offensive guy off our bench, which given his shortcomings, is discouraging. he's arguably our third/fourth scoring threat among all our players, if you don't count rafer's brickfest as a threat. meanwhile, dallas has someone like stackhouse off the bench. phoenix has people like "don't call me felix" barbosa, diaw off the bench. miami's third scorer is fatoine walker. the spurs have their big three. us? we have one-dimensional luther as both our third guy and our bench sparkplug. that said, here's to luther getting out of his slump and lighting up the jazz tomorrow.
I agree. Luther can't really create his own shots or do anything too spectacular (although some of his 3s have been pretty awesome), but every time McGrady missed a game, Luther stepped up big. I still think he'll be a really good player in a few years.
head had enough time to prove himself, but when he cannot shoot from 3 point line, his diffence hurts us deeply. Well Snyder should get more opportunity,at least he can stop Harpring & GG, provide some low post offence at the same time.
I would like to try Snyder (Synder to some) on that devil Harpring- Matt Harpring has been killing us with the physical play
