Cheaper, but not by much. You have to read a lot to recoup your money.

Have you tried reading anything on an e-reader? I was the same way as you, but I won't go back now that I have. On the other hand, I have some friends who thought they'd love e-readers and then just didn't care for it at all.

I think it depends on what you read as well. If you save about $10 per book for hardcovers, that's 15 books. If you read a book every 2 weeks, that's about 7 months or so.

If you mostly read paperbacks or buy used books, you're saving less per book so it would take much longer.

Authors needs to make a living too you know and pirating is pretty easy on digital format also. But I guessed it's also cheaper to produce than real books.

I don't think I can ever switch to digital format. I love the feel and smell of my books and they look good on my shelve. It just doesn't have the same magic for me when reading from that kind of format. But the advantages of digital format for me is the search function which is very useful when debating.

They need to drop their price on the larger DX version. I may buy that one. The 6" e-readers just seem too small for the stuff I read. These things are advancing so fast I may just wait to see what's out around Christmas. I'm getting tired of having a ton of books around everywhere and taking 3 or 4 of them when I go visit my parents.

that's what I am using it for... for a 4 day trip I needed at least four or five books... so if I was going for a week on the beach.. I needed to have at least 8 books to keep me happy in the sunshine and on the airplane...

now I can carry a whole library in one little fun techie toy!

A kindle is locked to a certain standard, right? You can't read text files on it?

I tried reading a book from amazon on my Ipad and it gave me eye strain after about two minutes. I'll try again to see if it was just a one time thing but I'm a little disappointed so far.

Once the iPad came out I knew the black and white readers would have a price war.

I cannot find this out anywhere. Does this Kindle 3 read .pdf files like the Kindle DX does? that is what I need it for.

Sometimes I think I camp out at the places. On a recent trip to Houston, where I drove down with the SO and kids and then stayed to be with an ill family member (flying back to Austin), my sister, another avid reader (master's degree in English!), took me to a 2 story Half-Price Books somewhere around the Kirby/West Alabama area. I went nuts. I bought so many books that I had to leave several at my Mom's, because they wouldn't all fit in my carry-on luggage! They went home on the next trip. Several had recently come out and I had almost bought them new, yet there they were at half price. Amazing!

Is there anywhere you can see these Kindle things in person before you shell out the bucks?

Was it on South Shepherd? I used to "live" at the CD/record stores around there in the 90's and also sat around reading for hours in the old Book Stop there. I think it used to be a theater or something and had 2 levels. I think it was next to a Whole Foods or something back then. Anybody know if that's the Half Price books Deckard is talking about?

No, but like I said, I get the convenience part of it. I just like my library is all.

That doesn't show the text. I'm referring to the original picture. The text looks bitmapped. I'm not sure what e-ink is yet, but it looks terrible in that picture. i do assume they look better than that, but it was an honest question.

Can you read them in the dark? Also an honest question.

No, just like a real book the pages are not backlit.

Go to Barnes and Noble and have a look at the Nook or Best Buy/Target and have a look at the Sony. I think they are similar in presentation to the Kindle. We bought Kindles for my son, sister and mother-in-law and they all love them.

There are also numerous public domain books (mainly the classics) that you can download for free.

The thing is that I also like to donate my books to the library. It just feels good to know that they will be read by a lot of folks and for free.
