With Asik's emergence and solid play, the need is no longer at center.

There are other "weaker" positions to fill.

I'd rather complete the "hand" than have an Ace-King high... if you know what I mean...

Interesting with some of the posters here coming up with all these fantasy trades - basically keep Harden and trade everyone. They discount one thing - Chemistry. Look at the Lakers. And I'd rather see our guys grow and win it.
Sign a star PF or DH and we are good to go.

I would keep the max money to upgrade the PF position. Our center position is just fine with Asik, so I would do a gambling on getting Kevin Love rather than getting the troublemaker Howard. Who would think that we can get Harden before we got him?

Kevin love is under contract until 2016. You want to trade valuable pieces for him like we did to get Harden when we can just sign Howard without losing anything? That's just plain dumb. You could keep all you assets and add the best center in the NBA and trade pieces for that PF.

I looked at your post, and there's a problem with it. It's based on the premise that the luxury tax threshold will be ~85mm next year. It's 70.3mm this year.

I think that $85mm number was erroneously calculated b/c the author of the article you cited uses "nba revenue" instead of "basketball-related income" to determine the luxury tax threshold.

I could easily be wrong (and I don't know the difference between BRI and nba revenue), but I don't see the luxury tax threshold jumping almost $15mm.

You can't compare Asik with Howard. You should focus on is it really worth to pay Howard that kind of money.

Little of topic but Ilyasova would be great deal. He has mid-range game, he can shoot 3pt well and he can rebound.

Asik < Howard clearly bothered by returning from back surgery too soon

Take off your homer glasses here for a sec. A clearly recovering Howard averaged 17/12 on a team full of stars. Asik's average when healthy, is only 10/12. Basically, Asik's better days is the equivalent of Howard's average day.

THIS. Exactly the point I've been thinking too. Asik's value is high, and there are no superstar PFs that are free agents and any where near Howard's level at the center position. That's why trading Asik makes sense if we get Howard.

To people that want to have Howard and Asik:

That will never happen! They both are Cs and not PFs. This would mean that Asik would be back on the bench backing up Howard. Sorry but after the year Asik has just had also with his 25 million dollar contract it would be an insult to him to ask him to go back to being a bench player. Have to choose one or the other. So Houston would have to pay Dwight close to $100 million/5 year compared to Asik's $25 million / 3 year. That's the decision.

The difference between Howard and all the players you named is that all of them are highly skilled hi IQ basketball players. Howard is a super athlete that plays basketball. He has played a lot of minutes in the NBA and at some point his body will break down. It looks like it has already started. Just like Francis, once his ability to out jump and out quick everyone goes so does his game.

I love me some Asik but the OP and many responses are flat out ridiculous. Personalities and Bias aside, Howard is equal or better than Asik in every way. Every GM in the league including Morey value's Howard much more than Asik.

If Morey could, would've shiped out Asik for Howard as soon as D12 was ejaculated before Mitch slapped him on his ass.

(while current game is going on)

LOVE Asik. Great temperament and hard worker. And CONSISTENT. Great no-ego team player.

These close-in passes off dribble penetration/pick & rolls he's receiving at the rim, he's TRYING to go up strong and catching cleanly, he's at least getting some foul calls

But Dwight Howard would be FEASTING off those for SURE dunks. And we know this.

That can be had with getting a good power forward who can finish too, without losing Asik.

Though if its Howard in/Asik out, that's a fairly easy decision for me in favoring Howard

Asik plays team basketball, has a better contract and isn't a drama queen. More valuable than Howard.

I don't want to lose Asik, and getting Howard shouldn't mean that happens, but after watching how well our offense runs when we have a competent big man to dish to in the lane (Omer's momentary flashes), it is clear that Howard would absolutely own faces here.

I want him, no matter the cost.
