Stay alert. You are right for being suspicious. I would assume most homes are staked out before being robbed. Possibly put a motion lights and a motion capture device on the area if you can. You can stick the fake signs but they know the game. Just looking around the house you can tell if a house is armed. (like looking at the window sensors)
Get a dog. I got 2 GSD's in the house and the blinds pulled up on the windows out front so they can look out. They can tell that someone is coming way before we even realize. I dare someone to break in, they may not even have time to shoot before being torn apart
The OP's original fear of being robbed is certainly justified, given the unusual behavior of the individuals knocking on his door. Robbers and their sympathizers will brand you a racist for feeling that way, and accuse you of being Zimmerman, in order to make things easier for themselves the next time. Don't buy it. Your safety is more important than potentially falsely hurting their feelings. If a group of young black males come to my house and then put placeholders in my lawn, something is out of place, and I'm taking precautions. For some reason, they have singled your house out, so I'd act now to protect against a future threat.
But if they are choosing between house with dogs or house without dogs... Which will they choose? I'm sure if someone goes into your house prepared to kill your dogs, they have more in mind than robbing you.

Well at least your not in greenspoint. That operator knew there was no help for me when we got robbed. mothafuugas get on my xbox live account. **** happens on a daily basis over here but now I moved out. 4-5 cars per 1300 sf house. My car got hit but a drunk driver twice. Second one, we chased him down and the operator hung up the phone twice. They keep taking out my trash from my backyard in my new neighborhood. They probably think I'm an old white man since that's what's mostly there. You don't even hear crickets, echoes. 1 car per house.
Give those guys your parents address, then give your parents a call 2 weeks later for a handgun referral.
I had similar issues. One person knocks on the door while others are driving around to check if anyone comes out and then they rob the house. I caught them the second on a mid Sunday morning breaking my window and I come outside half asleep eyes barely open and was like what the F are you doing. They got startled and ran right into my lime tree to jump my fence.
Just put a severed head on a stick in the front yard and a lot of redneck things around your house. That'll do the trick.
I'm still alive. Lol. Will be looking for suspicious activity for about a week, if nothing happens I'll go back to my normal life and try not to worry about getting robbed. Also. I highly doubt anyone is going to rob my house with an AR15 or even a gun for that matter. I may have reported suspicious activity but there are certainly no gangs out here, or at least not any significant ones.
