Because he's an under .500 coach with three teams across a bunch of seasons. Of course, he did make it to the conference Finaks one year... His only really successful year as a coach. And other than that year he wasn't always blessed with great, healthy talent. But I do t know how anyone can say he's a good coach or a bad coach. He's an average coach to me... Give him the right players and the Pelicans will compete. Of course... That describes the guy they just let go, too. We'll see what happens but it doesn't exactly have me super concerned about the Pelicans from a coaching perspective.
Bad choice by the Pels imo. Gentry is not a good head coach at all BUT he's an EXCELLENT assistant coach. There are few assistant coaches in the league that are better at that job than Gentry. As a head coach, nope, he just isn't cut out for it despite what he thinks. It reminds me of Wade Phillips. Someone who is better as an assistant than as a head coach. I mentioned on another thread that from what I saw with the Warriors, Gentry is the one that gives the Warriors players that swagger and confidence. Kerr is the one that makes sure they are better prepared than the other team once they are out on the court. Hopefully for the Pels sake, Gentry hires some quality assistants that can cover that on his team.
JVG hasn't coached in years and Gentry is coming from one of the Finals teams. If you look at the pattern of new hires it happens often that guys from winning programs get hired.
Just read this harvard paper that suggests that gentry may be one of the worst coaches in 30 years in developing players. Lol ( houston is no.3 team) http://harvardsportsanalysis.org/2015/05/which-teams-and-coaches-are-the-best-at-developing-players/
Gentry has been around a long time but doesn't seem to have accomplished much as a head coach. Fun fact... he is David Thompson's cousin.
That's an awkward situation for the Warrior's organization and players. The guy isn't really even invested as an assistant coach for the Warriors now that he's already secured a gig with the Pelicans... The Warriors should just let him walk right as this moment. As a player I wouldn't even look twice at what he as to say knowing he's really not invested in it at all... The question is will he be on the sidelines in the Finals. He shouldn't be.
It's not unusual for an assistant to get a gig as a head coach and stay on til the season's over. Jim Cleamons did it with the Bulls after the Mavs hired him as their coach. Of course, he wound up failing miserably with his new team. We'll see if the same happens to Gentry.
It's a turn off as a player. When a guy isn't going to be here next season anyways and it's not like he's going to retire, why would you listen to anything he has to say? His opinion doesn't matter because he is now apart of the Pelican's organization. I think Gentry shouldn't even be on the sidelines. He'd be a useless spectator at best.
His investment is that the whole point of coaching is to win a championship and he's on the cusp of doing it...
