We are pretty clogged at the PF position, so unless Landry flat out outplays Scola and Hayes, his lack of playing time will continue to cut into his production.

I think Brooks' recent surge will also cut into Alston's minutes and production...

    Key Dates
Trade restrictions: Most expire in mid to late December
All contracts become guaranteed: January 10
    NBA trade deadline: February 19

All teams below have been linked to recent trade talks. The objective of these scenarios is mostly to move Head or Alston and make salary space for Artest in 2009-10.

    Golden State
    Head(expiring) for Hendrix +Watson($100k guaranteed) +Morrow(non-guaranteed & Dec 15 trade restrictn)
    08-09: -($1.42M - amount owed to Morrow), 09-10: +$737k

    Charlotte
    Alston for Felton(expiring)
    08-09: -$751k, 09-10: -$5.25M

    Denver
    Alston for Atkins(team option) +Andersen(expiring)
    08-09: -$662K, 09-10: -$5.25M

    Indiana
    Alston for Diener +Jack(expiring) +McRoberts(expiring)
    08-09: -$565k, 09-10: -$3.51M

    New York
    Alston +Landry +Francis(expiring) for Lee(expiring) +Rose(expiring)
    08-09: -$1.09M, 09-10: (depends on if Lee is re-signed)*

*Rockets can afford to re-sign Lee up to $7.9M if $12M is set aside for Artest. The deadline for extending Lee was October 31 which the Knicks passed up.

    Chicago
    Alston +Landry +Hayes +Francis(expiring) for Hinrich +Gray(expiring/Gilbert Arenas rule)
    08-09: -$2.46M, 09-10: -$617k

    Other Assets:
    Omer Asik(draft rights)
    Bull's 2009 1st round pick
    Bull's 2010 1st round pick

Salary space simply won't be an issie to re-sign Artest if the Rockets can make the above scenarios involving Charlotte or Denver happen.

The Chicago trade scenario is the one that interests me the most. It looks as if the Rockets frontcourt depth gets a hammering but when Battier returns having Artest and Battier in the rotation they are going to need more minutes than the SF position can provide. Hinrich's salary has been structured to decrease annually.

    2008-09
    Hinrich, Brooks, Head
    McGrady, Barry, Wafer
    Artest, Battier
    Scola, Dorsey
    Yao, Deke, Gray

Free Agents: Darrell Armstrong, Mike Harris, Robert Horry, Bonzi Wells, Coby Karl,
Mickael Gelabale (tore ACL in March, return unknown) , Ira Newble

    2009-10
    Hinrich, Brooks
    McGrady, Barry
    Artest, Battier
    Scola, Dorsey
    Yao

If the Rockets re-sign Artest to a deal starting at $12M the Rockets will have around $1.6M left to fill out a 13 man roster. Artest taking less than $12M is key to getting Yao a quality backup C like Foster who will be a free agent. To fill out the rest of the roster minimum salaried players are good enough as they are third option players who won't be in the 9-10 man rotation Adelman uses.
