Consider too he might start the season in the valley, and will likely come off the bench if Wood and Theis are healthy.
Unlikely he'd go to RGV, the Rockets only have 4 bigs including Garuba. I think Sengun is the primary backup big and his playing time will depend on his performance. He looked really good on both ends in the first summer league game..... but it's just summer league.
Never thought he would do much this season, and still don't. I think he's gonna be an awesome player by year 3, but he's gonna have to add strength, keep developing his 3 ball and adjust to NBA game speed and athletiscm. Not to mention teammates that know how to run something other than a PnR or iso. Considering nobody is gonna give him regular post ups, he's working strictly on effort right now.
Very possibly, but they like to play KMJ and Tate at the 4. Garuba will almost certainly be in the valley working on his shot, and Sengun could perhaps use a cup of coffee down there to fine tune his PNR defense.
In the debate between Green and Mobley, we just spent months and hundreds of posts talking about how bigs need time to develop. Sengun goes out and does that and some of you are nitpicking his speed and lateral quickness and such. Shockingly, he's not Gary Payton. Who knew? We all knew. Give the guy a little time. In an NBA conditioning program, he will get stronger and faster. His mind is already fast and it will also improve.
I just can’t get over this play. The amount of confidence and creativity this shows only exist on star level players. Like you don’t want to overreact to a meaningless summer league game, much less a single play, but if there was ever a meaningless summer league play to overreact to this is it.
I agree, I think Sengün will probably spend some time in the G League this year. Not as long as Garuba, but plenty. There's pretty much no downside for the team, since we aren't likely to compete for anything but a lottery pick this year, and Sengün needs minutes and reps.
Also, you could tell from the highlights that he was nervous as hell and playing with TOO MUCH energy and too fast. Hell, when he gets himself leveled he is going to be an every game contributor. He has a lot of Scola in him. This kid is a fighter with his nose in everything. You cannot teach that passion and awareness.
Yeah, it's a portent of what's to come....all of this. By the time he's a 26 - 27 yr old man ...I mean, Sabonis at 25, just put up 20 12 and 7...which is a sick accomplishment. That's SIX years away for Sengun.
I said this months ago: Sengun’s closest nba comp is Sabonis, except, at the same age at Gonzaga Sabonis was just a power player. Sengun last year showed far higher skill level and production against much tougher competition. So…
Sengun was already the mvp of a league that is tougher than the g league, and that was a year ago. Sending him to the g league is preposterous.
