I asked a few people about why Sengun isn’t playing more. I asked a college college, a scout and someone associated with the Bulls… and none of them were that upset with how the Rockets are using him at this point. I heard his conditioning mentioned, that he is used to playing a game a week… his foul frequency was also mentioned but his defensive issues was the biggest thing pointed out. I know it will piss some of his fans off but that’s what I was told.
I mean there are more than a handful of posters who have been saying this but i guess it gets drowned out in the "Silas hates Sengun," and "Silas doesn't know crap" tsunami.
Thanks for the info. It does not piss me off but still none of them makes sense to me. 1- Are there any rookies who were playing a schedule comparable to the NBA? Is Sengun the only rookie that was playing a game a week? 2- As I pointed out before, his minutes is the same whether he fouls little or more. 3- There are a number of things that needs to be addressed with his defense. With the rockets at the bottom of the league, will it not be better to play him rather than sit him? You could argue the same way to sit Green (my point is not to sit Green. Sengun and Green should get all the minutes they can). Sengun might not have a good career due to several reasons such as being undersized for center, not developing a shot etc. but I can't see any reason not to play him at least 23-25 minutes a game on average.
The only way to get your conditioning up is to play. I remember when MDA would play the starters 40 minutes in preseason for conditioning.
never met non rockets fan that just loves the rockets to prosper... of course they are ok with rockets holding their best player back... ROOKIE OF THE YEAR THATS WHAT HE IS and the best player on rockets.... hes really basketball savant... not a 3pt chucker that gets hot for a couple of games then back to mediocrity or being bad at basketball....he does everything basketball related prettyyy pretty pretty good...EVERY DAMN THING...and hes A FREAKING WALKING HIGHLIGHT REEEL and A 2 WAY player Nook...hes a PLUS defender...BIG BIG PLUS...not just an ok guy defensively i dont need your scrub scouts to see that .....say i said helo... and the best part, hes doing it all despite the coaching and while being hold back by Silas to not spoil the golden boy ROY chances and leadership role they intended for him.... alas, what kind of coach and management are holding their player from winning a ROY? dont they wish to do the right by players? doesnt sound right....sounds sacramento kingsesque in fact...
I don’t doubt this at all, my issue is outside of fouling a lot (mainly from being too aggressive) where are his shortcomings on defense? His metrics are good, his counting stats are good and hustle stats are good. He gets beat for sure, everyone on this team does. But he’s in no way a negative on defense.
i dont think so... this is a perfect opportunity for management and silas to hold him back even more and longer, especially since jalen is back and is recuperating from that horrible start...
Why are you trying to pick a fight? Jalen started off in a slump, now he's playing great. Jalen being great doesn't make Sengun worse. It just means we have two players that are great.
The kid is only 19 but def already has miles on his legs due to already playing in an overseas league. Don't forget Houston would usually send their rookie big men to the G league to build Stamina and strength before finally allowing them to compete in the Rockets rotation. I trust the strength/conditioning coaches and Silas's staff to do what's best for Sengun. I think most of us don't want another Yao Ming incident, where our bigman had to retire way before he should have. Let's be patient. I'm sure Fertitta, Stone, Silas and crew would all love to have Sengun playing. They just want to protect their investment for the long run.
The two things that seem to limit his playing time a lot is foul trouble and defensive issues. That's it. He gets decent minutes and while people tend to focus on his pretty passes and some nifty moves, he needs to do a lot more to develop into a well rounded player. Believe it or not, that doesn't happen magically by increasing players minutes - that happens by the player working on things outside the game with coaches and trainers.
Fine, I'll play along... Your first point - he's not even the best rookie on this team and per the NBA.COM rookie ladder there are 8 rookies ahead of him (including Jalen). In his last few games, Alpi had more fouls than rebounds, Well in the Charlotte game he got one more rebound than fouls (5 fouls, 6 rebounds) but you get my drift... those are NOT savant like numbers Your second point - I wish he could shoot 3's consistently, it would really help his game. I recall that for the longest here at Clutchfans, we have been clamoring for an athletic big that can stretch the floor and rebound. Guess what, we have one and his name is NOT Alperen. Hint... its Christian Wood. And finally your third point - I know you folks would love to see him play 48 minutes a game, but organizations like the Rockets make playing time decisions based on what they and the training staff are seeing in practice and workouts, not what unrealistic fans want. I trust them a lot more than hyperbolic fans whose only agenda is to see their favorite player succeed. This is the HOUSTON ROCKETS not the Sengunites (or whatever a team dedicated to Sengun would be called ;-)) With all that being said, I like Alpi, and enjoy watching he and all of our rookies (except Garuba... talk about no PT) play. I hope he's a Rocket for a long time and will root for him and the others to succeed. I am just tired of all the my player vs your player, this player vs that player crap that has been so prevalent here lately. It's not the first time, this is not new, but what is new is all the HYPE pushed for one player or another based on absolutely nada... relax y'all, the Rox made good picks and I have every confidence that they will all develop into good if not great players down the road.
Rockets under Silas don’t necessarily agree. They make a big deal of conditioning outside of the actual games and even practices. John Lucas and the trainers are working with him a lot on conditioning. To be clear, I would be playing Sengun 30 minutes a night but that’s not how this staff views it. I watch the games and I think he is mediocre defensively watching him but with the ability to improve, but I think he is excellent offensively. What I can tell you is that regardless of what the advanced numbers say, none of the people I spoke to thought that he was good enough defensively to play 35 minutes a night. I heard he is hard to hide and can be exposed. Im surprised that they felt as strongly as they did about his defense. I’m not surprised they don’t entirely trust defensive metrics because I have heard numerous scouts say they are very flawed. Having said that, they all think he will be a long time NBA starter and the scout felt he would be a long term starter that helps a high end team win.
This is so strange when all we here is "there is nothing like game shape" and how it can't be replicated with conditioning outside games. But whatever.. I trust Lucas to do something, Jalen and JC have improved from just a couple weeks ago.. and Sengun seems to really love Lucas thanks for the inside information, Nook
