It could be old school thinking, but I believe the theory is that young players, especially bigs, develop bad habits that way. Better to have the player play the "right" way when he's on the court and pull him when he makes dumb fouls or can't handle the pace because of fatigue. At the same time, work on his conditioning off-court until he's ready to take a larger load of meaningful minutes.

I think that theory could maybe work in practice if you give all the players, or at least all the rookies the same treatment.

it's a good theory, but I really think Sengun is too smart for that. too smart to just all of sudden have bad habits. The reason Sengun was fouling so much, IMO, is he never wanted to let a play go when he got beat.

I think Sengun would be farther a long if Sengun was allowed to hoop. He is smart enough to learn when he is playing.

Silas did stick Jalen in the corner for half the season. And Gup had to fight for every scrap of playing time. I guess Silas was terrorizing and hazing all the rookies equally, lol

Sure, jalen in the corner was bad too. My comment was more about playing time.

To be honest, I didn't really pay that much attention to how the coaching staff was handling the other frontcourt players' development. But it did seem like they were more deliberate with Sengun.

Maybe. Though if he doesn't know when to let a play go, that seems like a potential bad habit to me.

And even if they were limiting his minutes, he still got 20 minutes per game.
That seems about right for a 19-year-old rookie big man playing in the American system for the first time. (And one who, I think, was used to playing 30 game seasons in Europe.)

Anyways, I'd be fine if they gave him around 25 minutes this season, and he made the most of those limited minutes.

This is from later on in the season when he didn't need a defibrillator - also if you'd watched this game you'd remember it was Jalen Green who iced the game in the 4th (remember he sat down Clarke) after the Grizzlies came to within 1. Sengun wasn't even on the floor, let alone being the guy who " won the game " despite the wishful thinking of the title.

Sengun was out of shape and fouled a lot earlier in the season - this was a true thing that actually happened according to world renowned experts in Alperen Sengun studies like Professor Alperen Sengun. I know it's hard for many people to believe their own lying eyes here, but please continue to fight him on it.

Just one reason why that narrative that he is a bad defender is just totally wrong.

His actually quite decent defending at the Rim based on a Rookie who was touted as his defense being a question at NBA level. Dude is smart but he does need to work on somethings which I have confidence he will get better over time. I felt he was also very aggressive and tried to block a lot of shots when he could have just contested but I’m hoping that was just aggressiveness being a bench player who was trying to prove himself giving 100% but I hope he doesn’t get in foul trouble as a starter.
