There is no question in my mind that Kelvin Catos contract was the worst decision in team history. I just cant understand the thought process of offering a 42 million dollar contract based on one preseason game against the Cavs. A close second would be us turning down the Bulls offer of Michael Jordan for Ralph Sampson.
NOT TRADING DREAM FOR DOUG CHRISTIE, #5 AND #12, WHICH LED TO SHAWN MARION AND JONATHAN BENDER LATER ON.
Olajuwon stopped being "The Dream" three-plus years ago. The sad fact is that you are proposing a Boki + (likely) Ming for (at best) Dunleavy and Olajuwon. I'd much rather be in our current position! As to Jordan, that SI article shocked me in mentioning that they had a second chance at him. Given Sampson's potential, its understandable why they didn't do the deal with Portland. Why they didn't work out the details of a Sampson for Jordan trade with Chicago in 1987 is beyond me. Sampson was already starting his long slide, and Jordan was in ascension. I guess the best thing about the non-trade is it made the club realize "breaking up a championship club" isn't necessarily a sin, making the later Drexler deal possible.
Yeah but can you just imagine the possibilites if the Rockets had traded Sampson for Jordan? We would have been UNBELIEVEABLE! There would be many more banners hanging from the rafters of The Summit.
It has to be not trading Sampson for Drexler and Jordan. Drexler, Jordan, and Olajuwon would have been the Greatest Dynasty in the History of Sports. I think they could have broken the old Celtic records without blinking. They would have had: 1. The best center in basketball. 2. The best SG of all time. 3. The 2nd best SG in basketball who would have been a top 5 SF or even PG. It would have been insane.
IMO one of the worst moves was signing Pippin when Antonio McDyess was a free agent and interested in the rockets.
rezdawg, Ive been wondering for awhile. Why do you have so many posts and your still a junior member? Just wondering.
I've got 3: - Trading Hakeem. - Getting Walt Williams and Kelvin Cato for Pippen. - Pippen over McDyess What WOULD'VE happened is irrelevant. Because you'd be taking stuff into consideration that CD, Rudy T, and Les didn't. You think the Rockets signed Mo T to a huge contract because they thought "Oh, we're going to be awful, so we'll get a good pick out of it". You just have to consider whether or not what was anticipated happened. If a player panned out, if the player you traded went on teh decline, whether any potential was tapped after a new contract, stuff like that... Not......Mo T got injured, so he's responsible in large part for us getting Ming. That's not a good decision. It wasn't a decision. It was just luck. I'm still, btw, to this day, SHOCKED that we didn't get more for Pippen. At that time, Cato was considered a project and Walt was a 6th man. That's what we got for Pippen? Who had won a championship one season ago and hit 40 points against LA to show he still had some in him? If he was truly mis-used, as he declared, then he could do much better, hence betetr trade value. We couldn't have gotten ONE potential franchise player, or at LEAST someone who was very close to All Star status?
I agree with all of these, with benefit of hindsight. Though I really did believe in Rhodes and Price. I know what happened to Price, but I still don't understand what happened with Rhodes. In a rare occurrence, I disagree with CBFC. I've loved the Rockets a long, long time. And I LOVED Chucky Brown. But aside from the championships (especially the second one), I've never loved the Rockets like I loved them with Barkley. Screw the titles we didn't win. It was just really fun to wake up every morning and read the paper when he was here. And whatever else people might say, no one wanted to win more than he did. I remember a string of games at the end of that last season we had Brent Price, when it seemed like only Barkley, Price and Sam Mack were playing their guts out. Unfortunately, none of them played stellar defense. Anyway, I wouldn't trade the Barkley years for anything.
I agree. With Webber in the lineup only in our dream would we have been in the lottery to draft Ming.
OK, some of you people must truly have no memory whatsoever... JWD...you obviously watched a different NBA playoffs because anyone who watched the Kings in this years playoffs and thinks Webber was anything but an all star in their series', is either sadly mistaken or just a Webber hater As for the Collier pick...we didnt pick him. We picked Pryzbilla and traded him for Collier and another 1st rounder....which in turn became Eddie Griffin. As for us not getting Griffin BECAUSE of Webber's ability to possibly push us to the post season...WRONG....WE ALREADY DRAFTED EDDIE A MONTH BEFORE WE WERE EVEN ALLOWED TO PURSUE WEBBER YOU MORONS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WE WOULD HAVE HAD BOTH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This thread is just depressing. It is just reminding me again of all the times the Rockets have been idiots.
I am not saying that Webber sucks that bad. It just would have been a bad investment for the Rockets. His value is going down, not up, and the Rockets would have to pay top top dollar for his services. Yeah, the Rockets value would have gone up fast with the addition of C Web, but at the same time, the fall out of the Rockets value will start fall sooner. With Shaq still in the league, Webber would not be getting us a Championship this year or next year neither anyways. Rockets made a great decision by leaving Webber alone and building for the long term future. Now the Rockets got lucky and got Ming. The Rockets know, the real reality to get a championship will be in 2-3 years, unless major injury to Shaq or Kobe(10% odds).
okay the rocks did pass up on jordan.. but how many other clubs did that as well.. the rockets did score francis for basically nothing.. same for mobley.. griffin did take a few picks but hey hes gonna be a superstar.. hopefully we'll all be looking back at this draft as the one making the rockets franchise
I don't think we trade Barkley ONLY for passing supersonic, we trade four player for one since we again wanted to win the Champion, which we haven't achieved since then. I am not blaming CB, he played hard as a stud, but it was just not enough IMHO.
