Here's mine; what's yours? C: Kevin Kunnert F: Otis Thorpe F: Robert Reid G: Mike Newlin G: Allen Leavell
Well Rodney McCray should be on there, he made so many "all-underrated" teams back in the mid 80's that he became overrated by the end of the decade.
I wholeheartedly agree with your selections. If there was a 2nd team, I would start with these guys: Charles Jones Scotty Brooks David Wood Larry Smith
C- Otto Moore PF- Kevin Kunnert, Major Jones, Caldwell Jones SF- Ed Ratleff, Jim Peterson SG- Mike Dunlevey, Craig Ehlo PG- Tom Henderson, Phil Ford
Other guys who was pretty decent: C: Otto Moore G: Stu Lantz G: Mike Dunleavy F: Walter Berry F: Zaid Abdul-Aziz a.k.a. Don Smith I'm just looking for guys who were solid and had fairly long careers in Houston and elsewhere. Walter Berry disappointed for awhile but perked up when he came here. Stu Lantz went on to greater things with the Lakers.
Maybe the alltime disappointing team. I thought he was pretty much a bust. I can't remember anything he did well-- very, very mediocre.... and to think we could have had Clyde instead....
Actually, as a player, Stu's best years were as a Rocket (San Diego for 3 years and Houston 1 year). 1968-69 - 7.3 PPG (Rookie Year) 1969-70 - 14.5 PPG 1970-71 - 20.6 PPG 1971-72 - 18.5 PPG He never averaged over 10 PPG for the rest of his career (8 seasons, Pistons 2 years and Lakers 2 years)
Ehh, he was draft bust certainly, and no clyde, but he had his moments. (Specifically, I remember him being named to one of SI's all underrated teams in their weekly "Inside Pro Basketball" section back in the late 80's-- I have a kind of wierd memory for that kind of thing) He had some decent seasons in the mid to late 80's, I found this fascinating (now) statistical analyisis of his 88 season, along with that of all the leagues other significant small forwards, and he is ranked solidly above average in a class with bigger name guys like Alex English, (note: it also predicts scottie pippen won't amount to much!) A fun read for old school fans: http://www.rawbw.com/~deano/hoopla/smfr3.html
hmmmm... no carl herrera on anybody's list. the dude's stats weren't all that great, but i'd take him from our championship years over a mo taylor anyday.
giddyup, Looking back at his draft position, and comparing that to his production, I can see where you are coming from. However, McCray was a 14/7/6 guy and was a perfect compliment on that 86 team. Also, his scoring #s are probably lower than what we had hoped for because he was the 3rd (at best) offensive option on that team.
Well, as the #3 selection, he was no Clyde, but at least he was better than the #2 selection, Steve Stipanovich!
Can you say career ending injury? Good article on Steepo (where are they now) if anyone is interested: http://www.nba.com/pacers/news/steve_stipanovich.html
<b>BobFinn</b>: I am completely surprised that Lantz was only with Houston 1 year. I went to a lot of games that year I guess. He is really impressed upon me. Thanks for the facts, man. <b>SamFisher</b> and <b>Codell</b>: I think I'm just bitter over McCray's being selected over Drexler. Drexler was just such an obvious choice for Houston; the Rockets must have been drafting for a position or something?
