These are individual songs. If you think 50 cent never made a good single, then you must not know good hip-hop either I don't think 50 cent will ever come close to Get Rich or Die Tryin again though.. he's so popular right now he doesn't have to try. Reminds me of Eminem actually.
Yep it just wouldn't be a hip-hop thread without the proverbial "Old School Rap sounds ****tier but its clearly better than the better produced catchy stuff of today." Maybe it will help if I add my top 20 (popular artists) A Tribe Called Quest - Can I kick it The Roots - Break you off 2pac - Troublesome 96 2pac - Starin at the World through my rearview 50 Cent - If I can't Mobb Deep - Shook ones part 2 Nas - It ain't hard to tell Nas - One mic UGK - One Day The Game - Hate it or Love it Kanye West ft Jay-z - never let me Down Talib Kweli - Get By Ludacris - Growing Pains Run DMC - Down with the King Outkast - So Fresh So Clean Outkast - Rosa Parks Eminem - Til I Collapse Snoop Dogg - Beautiful Eminem, Snoop, Xzibit - b**** Please part 2 Young Buck - Stomp
I've said this before but here it is again This is 50's best album, its basically a bunch of unreleased songs he dropped before Get Rich or Die Tryin. He's got Nas on a couple of songs and he did some work with DJ Premier. 50 was at his best lyrically when he was hungry for a deal. I'll give him props on his newer stuff because you'll never hear him over a wack beat.
Actually I came up with a list of songs I thought were great and listen to regularly. There is a reason no one listens to people like Common, it is becuase he is boring even on top of unreal beats by Kanye. I remember hearing the hype of how "Be" was going to be the best album of the year. I gave it one good listen and no song besides Go and maybe the Corner were worth listening to. Man I think even ODB going solo was a more entertaining than Common
Well honestly i feel that Common is one of the greatest lyricists of all time. The guy's wording is absolutely incredible. However, i do think his music isnt as exciting as other artists b/c his material isnt exactly great. Him and Mos Def are two of the most talented lyricists in the history of Hip-Hop, IMHO.
I don't understand... "Everything else you typed basically says people are due up, or it was thier best album yet. " I think albums released in the last year and upcoming releases are pretty good indication of the state of rap...actually, I think they're the only indications? So if I reference albums recently released and albums that will be released soon, I believe I am proving my point. "Common is not that good. So his best album will not be that great." This is when I realized we would probably have to agree to disagree. Common's one of the greatest lyricists of all time. Period.
dude, ODB's first solo album "Brooklyn Zoo" is phenomenal.... as are most of the debut wu-tang solo albums. A Tribe Called Quest Wu Tang Mos Def Talib Kweli Blackstar Gangstarr J5 Dilated peoples Pharcyde The Roots Kool Keith/Dr. Octagon Soundbombing compilations UGK Ghetto Boyz Biggie Pac Cypress Hill Bone Beatnuts de la soul nas Gravediggaz Dre Jay Z Outkast Mobb Deep Three 6 Mafia these are the guys i used to listen to back in the day. i don't listen to hip-hop nearly as often anymore, although i do have some Del The Funky Homosapien rocking right now.
The Soundbombing complications have some of the best lyrics and punchlines I've ever heard. You have to bring the heat on those albums. Eminem's song "Any Man" is one of the best I've ever heard. As far as hip hop now goes, I've been listening to a lot of 9th Wonder and Little Brother. Their doing their part in trying to bring back hip hop.
You're crazy! Common's "BE" was one of the best albums of '05. You must be into ca$h $ and lil john type rap where a bunch of dudes yell a bunch of garbage that makes no sense at all over catchy beats.
Be was alright, Common should have gotten some other producers besides Kanye, the album starts to sound the same after a while. Common's best album is "Ressurection", there are a lot of good albums from that year, but when I hear Ressurection it takes me back like no other. Rap was so much better back then.
Agreed. It is like who is the best emcee debate, Biggie or Pac. I love good flows, but it has to have a great delivery, beat, etc.
Actually no, that is when I honestly think rap starting going downhill. It got bad in 95 when master P came out, then it got better for some time, and we are now kind of stuck in neutral in this "crunk" era. I find Lil John funny, but not great as an entertainer. But LJ can lay down some good beats.
What Master P did as a business man is outstanding. He showed rappers how to be truly independent. most labels in rap are back by larger labels, No Limit was straight independent. He is a marketing guru, he built up a brand, and he flooded the market. he built up loyalty where listeners bought not P records but all No Limit artists. the only label I've seen do that is Def Jam. that being said he helped kill the quality of music because other labels followed his lead. the first I saw doing it was Roc a fella, Jay Z. Jay Z put out at least one album every year from 96-02, solo, as well as other artists on his label. but Jay Z in my opinion really only had two good CD's the first, and Blueprint. all the others he could have waited, taken the best songs, and built up an incredible catalogue. for a guy so gifted he really doesn't have the number of quality albums he should, imo. but he was following the master p strategy, build label, flood market. in the late eighties and early nineties, rappers would put out a cd every two years. they would build up anticipation and put out quality. P changed all of that, but to his credit he helped show some of these guys how to make money.
I have no idea what that means. if you mean spending it on jewlry and cars these guys are selling an image. if you mean investing it I think you would be surprised at what some of these guys do with their money.
