"Who is the greatest hip-hop group of all time?" meaning this should include current. Out of your list, i think Outkast takes it and BTnH second but I also think new generation, Black Eye Peas should be in that mix.
what?? i wish they could duplicate that type of album today, everything since then has been doo-doo. after 9th left, getback & leftback sucked, phontes solo album sucked, and i didnt even waste time on poohs solo album.. minstrel show was incredible.. i spent a bunch of time wishing that little brother was just phonte & 9th wonder but phontes solo album was dookie and he had production from 9th. phonte would rather sing as a member of foreign exchange, instead of be an mc as little brother.. ------------------------------- a couple of albums from rapper/producer duos you all need to check out are. "blu & exile - below the heavens" and "rashad & confidence - element of surprise".
plus i will never stray from an opportunity to inform that he is one of our own, born and raised in houston texas. he moved to brooklyn after college and became one of the greatest hip-hop producers of all time, completely changed the new york city boom bap sound..
I won't even rank in my order as I love all of them BUT some of them do not deserve to be on that list. I love 8ball and MJG, I love Three Six, BTnH but c'mon son.... on the same list as Kast, Wu-Tang, UGK, ATCQ, The Roots, PE, NWA, DeLa, Beastie, etc? C'mon dude.
I see a lot of the ones I would've said already mentioned, but one group I've always loved that doesn't get enough credit for doing something a little different is PM Dawn. In their album, Of the Heart, of the Soul and of the Cross: The Utopian Experience they gave me one of those "whoa, that's different" moments in music that only groups like A Tribe Called Quest, Bone Thugs, Enigma, etc. have done. Are they the "greatest"? Of course not, but they were damn good at what they did. I can't believe that was over 20 years ago... damn! And what? No love for Whodini or 2 Live Crew? Lyrically they suck, but as legends of the industry and the influence they had, they're among the greatest.
Definitely a great concept with jazzmatazz but I thought Guru ruined it. His unmusical, often staccato delivery did not mesh with the music in my mind. Also the lyrics were really basic and lame. He gets credit for being on the front wave of jazz/hip hop fusion but ATCQ, MC Solaar (within jazzmatazz alone Solaar kills him in "Le bien, le mal"), the Roots, etc. did it better.
