i'm arriving at this conclusion, too.

but i have to say...if you're pointing to randy johnson's contract offer and carlos beltran's contract offer to suggest that the astros are limited financially...you need to consider having an Exhibit C. both were more than fair offers. rj was going to arizona...he let us know that ahead of time. we made a very good offer, anyway. beltran was offered what would have been one of the top 10 player contracts in MLB history.

Why? Because he dropped 38 and 124 in Round Rock back in 2001? There's still some serious flaws in his swing, ala Richard Hidalgo. He's a solid 4th outfielder, but I question his upside at age 28.

The big difference here is that while you are again depleting your farm, the local product Dunn should be easy to resign in 2 yrs, and be a mainstay in the heart of your order for the better part of a decade. Immediate and long term help.

yeah...that's continued value. not just a summer rental.

depending on the package, i think i'm in. i think i'd go for it. as i said before, i'd rather part with Lane than Burke. but i don't think i'd let burke be a deal-breaker at this point.

Isn't Biggio like 38 years old now? I would think Burke needs to hang around to be his replacement when the time comes.

i still wouldn't let that stop me from acquiring dunn at this point....because i'm not CERTAIN that burke can replace biggio as an everyday 2B.

So you have seen enough after just one half of his first full season? Ensberg was in a similar boat last year and are you glad we kept him?

Burke can not replace Biggio. I doubt Burke will end up in the fall of fame.

Actually, Lane has participated in parts of the last two years, and he definitely has issues with his swing. At 28, I'm just not sure that he's going to break out anytime soon. Meanwhile, Chris Burke's a few years younger, and I would be less inclined to give up on him at this point. He was our 1st round pick a few years ago, and this is his first shot at the bigs.

I really like Burke. The more I watch him, the better I feel about him. Keep Burke, include Lane. Actually at this point, I wouldn't mind keeping the team as it is except for adding stud relievers. Lets go shopping this winter.

Actually, Lane has had shoddy-ass playing time until this season and never really had a chance to prove how he could perform. Granted, he has had some slumps but he's on pace for a 30 HR season which is not bad. I only see him getting better with consistent playing time. I don't want to trade him after just a half season of getting to play consistently. I think he has the goods to be a lot better. He stays.

You'd take Lane over Dunn? Dunn who is younger and currently a better hitter?

No...I just believe in Lane's potential. Maybe that is a pipe dream? Oh well. :(

The trade talk doesn't appear to be grounded in any reality from all appearances. It seems to be media born. I would be surprised if it went down.

Trade rumors flying about Dunn, Griffey
    By Hal McCoy

SAN FRANCISCO | The talk was about trades — the rumors, the possibilities —and Ken Griffey Jr.'s ears opened wider as he heard Adam Dunn speak.

"You're going to be lost when I'm gone, what are you going to do?" said Dunn.

"You're going to like it in Milwaukee," said Griffey.

"Milwaukee? If that happens you'll see me at Arkansas-Pine Bluff playing college football, even though there are worse places than Milwaukee to play," said Dunn.

Milwaukee is not one of the rumored hot spots for Dunn. Houston is. Los Angeles is. Cleveland is. Washington is.

And Griffey? The usual suspects — New York Yankees, Atlanta. What the rumor mongerers forget so easily is that Griffey is at the complete no-trade level of his contract and would have to say yes to any trade.

Dunn is more likely, perhaps more so after the season than at the July 31 trade deadline. He stands to make a huge leap in salary in arbitration. And the Reds have shown no inclination to talk about a long-term contract for the 25-year-old outfielder who is on pace to hit 46 home runs for the second straight season.

    Dunn is flat-out unconcerned.

"I've been hearing a lot of that stuff, too," said Dunn. "I'm hearing it from people back home (Houston) about the Astros. It has been on the radio a lot back home."

The last time the Reds were in Houston, Dunn told the media there he wouldn't mind playing for his hometown team, for the team he grew up watching. That didn't mean he wants traded, just that if the Reds want to trade him, trade him home.

"Once again, you hear . . . but that's something I try to stay out of," he said. "To think about all that stuff is stupid. You don't have any control over it."

When Dunn was asked about his salary and possible arbitration, he continued lacing his shoes for Thursday's game and said, "I don't know. I really don't know or follow that stuff because I don't even know how it works. I don't understand it and I don't want to understand it. Just let me play baseball.

"My agent, Brian Peters, handles all that stuff. He'll do what's right and I love that guy," said Dunn.

Griffey heard the last part and said, "You shouldn't talk about me like that."

Said Dunn, "I sure wasn't talking about you, so tuck your ears in, dude."

"Yeah, I love you, too," said Griffey.

"That's why I would feel bad if I got traded," Dunn added. "He wouldn't know how to handle it."
