I think they would have to consider it. Mitre and Rusch are, imo, more than capable of filling in the rotation and Wood seems to get injured every year (which actually makes him a good fit for Cinn).
Actually, JDJO reported the exact opposite. http://www.chron.com/cs/CDA/ssistory.mpl/sports/3252593 ESPN needs new fact checkers.
Purpura later told the Chronicle the rumored trade was a "media fabrication." When a GM says something this blatant, he usually means the opposite.
Adam Dunn trade A rumor only....deal is close to being completed to get Dunn for Lane and Bucholz/Astacio. Will have to see if this comes to fruition.
This is a much better deal than the other proposed one. Lane and Astacio for Dunn, hell yes. Buchholz, Astacio and Nieve, no way.
http://www.sportsline.com/mlb/story/MLB_SC-RUMOR Cincinnati Reds Updated:07/06/2005 The Reds insist they are not shopping LF Adam Dunn but they could still trade him, says the Cincinnati Enquirer. The 25-year-old slugger is making only $4.6 million this year and is eligible for arbitration that could double his salary for 2006, a big hit for a budget-conscious organization. Houston Astros Updated:07/06/2005 The Houston Chronicle reports the Astros have denied rumors that they are close to trading for Reds slugger Adam Dunn. ... The Astros are interested in reliever Mike Stanton, who was designated for assignment by the Yankees, says the Houston Chronicle. I'd like to see another source saying something different.
The Reds definitely would be interested in adding an OF in a deal in which they are attempting to alleviate their current glut in the OF.
What everyone needs to remember is that no one has actually heard a legitimate organization even confirm that the Astros and Reds have had even minor discussions of a trade involving Dunn, much less close to a deal. It's all been speculation from this "I heard on ESPNNews that..." post from the MLB and ESPN.com boards. The Reds would be incredibly foolish to even trade Dunn for Buchholz, Astacio and Nieve. But trading Dunn for Lane and one of the three might be the most unbalanced trade I've ever heard. The Reds aren't the brightest club around, but they're not the Clippers.
The difference between his current batting average of .245 and a "respectable" batting average of .265 is exactly 5 freaking hits. The guy's OBP and SLG numbers are not just good, they're elite. He's 25. And you're complaining about 5 freaking hits. I am a die-hard Reds' fan who has shuddered as the Reds' have continually slotted him 6th and 7th in the batting order. THIS is what accounts for his low RBI totals. The guy hits more solo HRs than nearly anyone because he's hitting at the end of the order. If he were slotted ahead of Griffey/Pena/Casey or Berkman/Ensberg instead of Aurilia/Larue, he'd exponentially more dangerous at the plate.
If the Astros traded Nieve, Buccholz and Astacio they wouldn't be able to call up a good starting pitcher prospect for the next 2 years because the next wave of good starters are still in A ball. It would be a horrible move, even more so when you consider that the only dependable starter the Astros have signed long term is Roy Oswalt.
