and I know we're on a sports forum... I've unfortunately ran into the comparison here before... but, never... ever compare sports to music... ever...

it just blares a lack of understanding of the artform.... a lack of understanding of art altogether.......

The main point of that was about a person experimenting then finding their best fit. And seeing that the person probably has other things in their background than it appears.

Not all performers are "pure". Not everyone is a starving artist building the ultimate masterpiece in their cellars and married to their craft. As bad as pandering to minimal tastes is to music, and as bad as it is to get even further away from the humanities and into specialization, you can't force people to do expressionist art over making a living. That was the other point.

And Beyonce has to stop generating prepubescent sluts.

I'm not sure I follow the logic. What is not a skill, is talent?

I'm assuming by vocoder, you meant autotune, the program that auto-corrects out of tune singing voices not the device that connects with instruments. Which is funny as Madonna uses autotune religiously.

No, I haven't seen Madonna live but I have seen taped live performances on television. Her voice is weak, in my opinion. I challenge you to find me a video (on youtube, or otherwise) that shows her singing better than the previously posted video of Lady Gaga before she became famous.

Talent is important, but so is what are you being asked to do.

Could these pop stars sing opera, most of them can't...but they aren't asked to, they are asked to churn out an image and danceable fun tracks.

I am a community theater actor of middling talent, much in demand as long as I am willing to work for free.

Put me in a British sex farce, or a east podunk adaptation of Neil Simon and you would think I was a stellar actor.

Put me in "Long Days Journey Into Night" on Broadway or the West End of London and you would see one overmatched fat boy.

Now I do have better acting chops than some action stars, but that doesn't mean I can do what they do or look as good doing it.

These performers are entertainers, and there's quite a lot of people who are entertained. Of course the music snobs will continue with soapbox rants that these successful music artists have no talent and/or that their audience isn't musically sophisticated enough to value good music.

A lot of this music isn't what I would listen to, but that's my subjective opinion. I think there's a place for all kinds of music in the marketplace. To each his/her own.

What makes one better than the other?
I think in our country we overvalue 'Talent'
    VASTLY overvalue 'Talent'
[Which is why actors, sports players. etc get paid more than the people that actually make more money than Doctors, Teachers and Engineers]

I'm not going to watch the video but any father who lets his little girl dress or dance like that should have his ass kicked.

Echo this. The pretentious folk are just as annoying as the ones who mainstream music panders to. I just don't get how if you don't like someone, they have no talent. I think John Mayer is an uber-douche and makes some of the lamest music on our planet, but I also think he's a talented guitarist.

erroneous summation... as was clearly evident, I, unlike yourself... have no preferential bias... there is no genre "I don't like"... so it's never a matter of "someone I don't like"... that's subjectivity, and worse, narrow-minded and ignorant... especially when applied to a subject as transcendent as music... and really, art in general...

and you continue to misinterpret my intention and my reasoning... I've explain there is no "snobbery" involved... pretentiousness is to claim to know better than most when there is no evidence of merit in comparison... in other words making an assertion with no greater knowledge over the subject than that possessed by the average person... such as what you continue to do here...

erroneous.... it's as if I said no more than two typical sentences... without an explanation or reasoning provided......

I suppose in the end it's akin to an adult trying to explain reason to a toddler....

    have trouble with definitions...?

    skill = learned, not inherent.

talent = inherent, natural, not learned.

well now, that was never what you had originally proposed with what you declared.... that "there are worst pop stars that sing and dance better than madonna"... Lady Gaga, unfortunately, does not qualify....

Hmm do you only play classical instruments and listen only to classical music?

I have a cousin who used to be into the Smashing Pumpkins and Phish in college, then he got a Masters in Philosophy, started growing out his beard, and now he won't listen to anything other than Bach.

Actually was trying to engage you in conversation for once, your tone seems to always be one of snark and condescension, I am just interested in what you define as "music".

You can be a talented smut peddler. (There, just combine everything into one entity to stop the hair splitting. )

Whats worse, if the content in actual creative music has a negative tone, is immoral and brings down society? Or terrible music with an uplifting tone and positive message? Are we judging the quality and talent level of the music, or the tone of what its conveying?

Thats the thing with a lot of people preaching the finer tastes and pursuits. Its mostly kept to themselves. They never share. Most people just open up open up and try to CONVEY to other people exactly how their interest is good. Elitists in their own mind play keep-away. Its proprietary info, like Daryl Morey keeping all the statistical techniques out of the public domain for competitive edge.Oh darn, I just made an analogy of sports and music again.

Shucks here's another one... I used to watch sports and sister would ask about the rules and stuff. But I always said its over her head, whats she really care, she always watches the TV give me my turn, she just likes the cute guys anyway, etc etc...well I prevented her from liking sports forever. There wasnt any harm in explaining first downs and stuff, but me being an entitled ass just caused resentment. Thats how the snobs eventually come off...
