Jury has found against Alex Jones for $4 million in damages. https://www.cnn.com/2022/08/04/media/alex-jones-trial-sandy-hook-decision/index.html
and when you have an audience of millions and tell them that someones child didnt exist, that the parents are crisis actors and/or that the parents are lying about having a kid killed in order to take your guns and then your listeners engage in a campaign of threatening, harassing and stalking the parents of the murdered children, to the point that some had to move repeatedly or go into hiding then you should be held accountable for that (not sure if its structurally correct, but this might be longest single sentence ive ever typed). this is a "yellling fire in a crowded theater" type situation, imo. its well established that there are no protections for that kind of rhetoric. you should already know that.
nobody should approve of what jones incited his followers to do to those poor people. this isnt a free speech issue.
Looks like Jones’ company filed for bankruptcy. However, he took out 62m in the past year. I won’t be surprised if they keep going after him until he’s living on one of his fan’s couches.
I am not a civil practitioner, and they have very different discovery rules than we have in criminal practice. It is possible that everything on his phone was discoverable, and if it was, there would be no issue with the phone being turned over. Since the plaintiff's counsel framed it as a mistake and that he informed counsel for Jones who then took no action, I would guess there is some sort of malpractice on the part of counsel for Jones. In that case, if he loses at trial, he can sue his attorney for malpractice. I know there are some ethics rules relating to receiving accidental communications and contacting counsel about what should be done with them.
anyone crying about free speech sounds dumb AF Jones really thinks he’s slick with the 62 mil withdraw from his company
i was listening to a lawyer on local talkshow host jeff wards podcast today and he said that even though jones lawyer sent a follow-up email saying "disregard the previous email" he was legally required to send a notice in writing and be specific about what he did not want introduced. he had a certain time period to do that within and failed. im guessing thats the "12 days" that the plantiffs lawyer mentioned. heres a conspiracy...jones and his lawyer did it deliberately to try and get mistrial. https://jeffwardshow.com/podcasts/ its the 2nd one down titled "the circus like trial of Alex Jones takes a bizarre Jan. 6 turn. (Your primer on what’s next.)". worth a listen if youre following this case.
I hope so. The Ensign thinks the evidence against trump is nothing...because it's trump and Ms. Sidepiece.
Defamation can still hold media partially accountable. Isn't that what the Sandmann Hairless Nuthuggers were shooting their blanks in the air over?
This thread explains a lot of the state of the “Conservative” movement. You have some defending an admitted con man as a martyr of free speech.
I’m a conservative too bro, but this madturbation towards people like Jones is embarrassing he doesn’t believe what he’s saying, he spreads hate and lies for $$$
You were an awful lawyer? Or you found the profession awful? What did you pivot to? Can't blame you on this one. I stopped practicing over 20 years ago (I moved over to the business side of things). Obviously still have to deal with lawyers a lot (e.g. in contract negotiations, M&A, etc. - some if them drive me crazy.
I wish I had a JD. Knowing the law is such a powerful asset , also facilitates so many other avenues In the corp setting
@Commodore is a troll, piece of sh-t, or both. And enjoying it. the reaction to Alex Jones getting whacked with a verdict is ….. tribal defense
Alex Jones ordered to pay $45.2 million in punitive damages in Sandy Hook defamation case https://www.yahoo.com/news/alex-jones-sandy-hook-defamation-trial-punitive-damages-173243257.html i am surprised to see it this much. from what i heard, the punitive damages are generally not more than 4x's the compensatory damages which would have made it closer to $12 million. i guess we now know the cost of freedom of speech, eh commodore?
