Why would they sell it for cheaper than normal price? I don't really understand. Sure, they save studio time, but honestly, that's probably one of the cheapest things involved with major label albums.
Here's a good article about the way Rush screwed up their last album: http://www.prorec.com/prorec/articles.nsf/articles/8A133F52D0FD71AB86256C2E005DAF1C
Whether it be remixed or remastered, or what have you, The Misfits come to mind. Also some Wildhearts imports I have. Def Leppard's "Pyromania". I know there's some more that I can't think of at the moment (I'm actually always pining for things to be remastered). Early Alice Cooper. Faster Pussycat's first one. I try to listen to Hüsker Dü and just can't b/c the sound is so bad. Good topic. As far as great remasters/reissues, the Ramones' first 4 albums are at the top of the list, with "Leave Home" being a standout.
Not totally true - mastering (and remastering) involves more than just adjusting overall volumes. It also includes running the mixer through various EQs, compressors and limiters in order to make sure the sound is as clear, loud and punchy as possible. A good mastering job can make certain instruments seem louder and more defined because it improves instrument separation and boosts/cuts certain muddying frequencies. Mastering really can make a huge difference - listen to a first generation Hendrix CD and then listen to the ones that were released under the family label. The bass is louder and more defined, and the instrument separation is better. But I think you're correct that ZZ Top remixed their old songs - although in this case (if Manny is describing correctly) they mixed in new sounds rather than just raising levels on instrument tracks.
I don't know what you could do about Hüsker Dü or the Misfits- the original sounds are so rough that you probably couldn't do very much. I don't know if the first Bad Brains album on ROIR has been remastered, but the sound is pretty weak.
I was just giving a layman's description. But yeah, the problem he was describing with the zz top reissues is a mixing issue. As for Husker Du, I don't know if much can be done to improve their sound. I love the band and their songwriting, but I think a lot of what makes them kind of unlistenable at times is their guitar tone, and I don't think remastering is going to help that.
Faster Pussycat's first one - hell, that was my favourite record after Guns'n'roses appetite for....... Bedroom wall is such a banger.
You mean Bathroom Wall? Btw Palm ... Turbonegro is working on a new album- producer is one of the dudes from Redd Kross: TURBO CHARGED
I love this album like a fat kid loves cake, but I have to crank up the volume to listen to most of it.
Jeff Beck - Rough and Ready Great great music , but it sounds like they had the input dials set on 11. Download a file of 'Situation' or ' I've Been Used' and check it out. I don't know how it could have ever gone into production sounding like that.
