r35352: http://www.cpj.org/Briefings/2001/aljazeera_oct01/aljazeera_oct01.html Deeper questions have been asked about Al-Jazeera's alleged anti-American editorial bias, the supposed pro-Taliban leanings of its Kabul correspondent Tayseer Allouni, and its apparent failure to air footage that shows the Taliban in a negative light. Critics have accused the channel of acting as a mouthpiece for Osama bin Laden by broadcasting his taped messages. Western media have even questioned whether Allouni had held on to Bin Laden's first videotaped message after the September 11 attacks until after U.S. bombing of Afghanistan began—something Al-Jazeera and Allouni have denied. A New York Times editorial recently criticized Al-Jazeera for reporting that Jews had been informed in advance of September 11 not to go to work at the World Trade Center. (An official at the station told CPJ that a talk show host cited the charge, which had previously appeared in a Jordanian newspaper, and asked his guests what they thought about the report.) More recently, the channel has been criticized for using the term "martyr" in newscasts to describe Palestinian suicide bombers who have killed Israeli civilians. But Al-Jazeera contends that they use the term for all Palestinians who die fighting a "cause," not just suicide bombers.
I think CNN and MSNBC are pretty biased in their war coverage. It's indistinguishable from Fox. Someone killed those civilians. Whether it's AAA fire falling to earth or the Hilla massacre by the US or an errant HARM missile, it's news except in the US. http://www.villagevoice.com/issues/0315/cotts.php
They may be biased in some of the reports they decide to issue. But they don't lie, and they don't have extremist views. Unlike Al Jazeera.
OK, I was not going to defend Al-Jazeera, but I have to be the devil's advocate for a second here. The most serious of these arguments listed appear to be hearsay and misrepresentations of what happened. Suicide bombing is stupid, but give me a break on the terminology. Are you anti-abortion or pro-life or pro-choice or pro-family...
LOL, well I'm not really trying to attack Al Jazeera. I think overall it's a good thing that they exist. But the problem is that they still have very extremist views. If KKK tv existed, wouldn't you criticize them? Even if they reported what they believed to be true?
A little off topic..... But have you guys seen the Spanish Television War Coverage??? Or if you guys remember their 9/11 Coverage?? They showed the plane hitting the second WTC over and over and over again in every position for weeks!! They show more graphic footage than any station i've ever seen. I'm fluent in spanish so their commentators don't hold back either.
Fox commentators *regularly* lie and they do have extremist views. For a few examples http://www.fair.org/extra/0108/oreilly.html http://www.coulterwatch.com/files/BW 2-016 - Timeline of Treachery.pdf http://www.dailyhowler.com/dh071002.shtml
I agree with you, even the guy from Al-Jazeera said, if you want balanced coverage, flip the channel and watch CNN and then after a while , watch some Al-Jazeera. I would find a way to disagree with everyone!
Al-Jazeera has nothing on Saudi Arabia. Well, here's an editorial from our *friends*, the Saudis... ( I'm pretty sure nothing gets published here that isn't condoned by their government.) http://www.arabnews.com/Article.asp?ID=24875
More on the fog of war. In spite of our hi tech gadgets, sometimes we just need a map. http://www.latimes.com/news/nationw...9apr09,1,3454193.story?coll=la-home-headlines selected quotes below: A reporter for the Los Angeles Times, traveling with the tank unit that mounted the fire, said there appeared to have been confusion about the location of attackers. In addition, commanders of the tank unit had received intelligence that Iraqi spotters had climbed to the rooftops of buildings in the area to direct fire onto the tank positions. At about that time, the Times reporter said, someone -- possibly a journalist -- in the upper stories of the Palestine Hotel was spotted looking out at the tanks through binoculars. The tank round that crashed into the 15th floor of the hotel was fired shortly afterward. A few hours later, officers in the 4th Battalion of the 64th Armored Regiment reportedly engaged in a long discussion to differentiate between the Palestine Hotel and the Iraqi Intelligence Ministry across the Tigris. At one point, an Associated Press reporter attached to the tank unit telephoned his colleagues at the Palestine and asked them to hang a sheet out a window to make it clear which building was the hotel.
